    Router!

Well, since my previous posts and the problems I had using the Billion DSL Modem, provided by TOT and my D Link wireless router, that seemed to have endless problems with torrent files, I can safely say, that removing these two pieces of equipment and buying a new replacement has been a Godsend.

On Saturday I bought a Belking N150 modem/wireless router, so was able to remove the TOT supplied modem (The D link went the night before smashed into a hundred pieces) It must have been fried, it wouldn't even upload simple JPG files to an online album, every single photo hung and disconnected about half way through, while the router red light came on and disconnected.

Anyway, I can recommend the Belkin, way way ahead of the previous kit.

This thing has been connected since Saturday night, it hasn't dropped a connection yet, has downloaded about 6 movies - of dubious quality I may say, but that's me not the router.

Had it running today and it was running bit torrent downloads at 304KB/s, I was still able to use firefox, and the kids were in the other room on line playing one of those "Guitar Hero" online games - the internet connection is 3MB/s, so this thing was working it's ass off.

I did some speed checks today too, and it is the highest ever upload rate i have ever got.

So, if you want an all in one wireless/router/modem, from my past sad experiences, I can certainly recommend the Belkin - it's on special at 2700 Baht or thereabouts!

I wonder if it handles the port forwarding automatically... I have a Zyxel wifi router and that crap doesn't work well with Emule. Can't get a Hi-Id connection.

It does indeed, you simply go to the virtual server page and stick in the details of which port you want to open.

I found a couple of things that are not very good though.

1: If you disable UPNP, the router performs a full reset. (By default it seems to accept UPNP)

So, should you go and change something in any of the other pages that require a RESET - it reverts back to allowing UPNP, so then you need to go back and disable UPNP - it's a catch 22! in this respect it is pretty CRAP, as is any support from Belkin, they don't even have the router listed, and the firmware update is shit and doesn't work.

Most firmware updates listed online are older than the one the router ships with.

Oh, and if you try to change the log in password, you are in for some fun and games.

But for a reliable fast torrent machine, it is streets ahead of the Dlink I had before.

I can only agree with the quality of the Belkin products.

Last year after the Billion modem I got free from Maxnet was unusable I bought a N1 ADSL2+ Wireless modem-router:
and it works like a charm without the need to reboot it periodically. Lifetime warranty as well.

If somebody is interested I have a Wireless G+ Mimo Router for sale for peanuts (with instruction book, install CD, power supply, cables). Very good condition. Lifetime warranty as well. EDIT: in Chiang Mai.

Based on this recommendation, I bought a N 150 yesterday, its now up and running, and Missismigins as you state a huge difference therefore I love you greatly - today!
During the 12 hours or so it took to set up there were times Missismigins that I truly hated you!
The problem was I was set up on open DNS, this causes the software to give an error that the network adapter is not working, after updating every driver possible, using the laptop etc, eventually cracked it, setup Open DNS again and setup port forwarding. I now need to rest!
Anybody using a TOT moderm - dump it, changing makes a huge difference

glad I didn't have your same problems, mine was up and away in about 20 minutes...glad to here you are seeing the benefit. Mine has been running a couple of weeks now with no crashes, no hangs, just very fast speed, I still cannot fathom which was the problem, the TOT Modem - the Billion thing or the D-Link, I think it was the D-link to be honest, but I will never know as I lost my rag with the whole setup, and the D-link now lies in a hundred pieces in a small box in the corner...the only reason the Billion doesn't end up the same, is i can't read the contract!

Now, a precautionary tale, I spilled a bit of whatever (pobably a beer), over my keyboard, and the keys became a bit sticky.

i removed every single key and cleaned them in a soap and alcholol mix, sadly, upon reassembly, i must have got a bit of liquid inside the keyboard and found a few keys were shorting.. instead of getting "C" I was getting CV and BN etc.

So, being innovative, I took the wifes hair dryer, to evaporate the problem.

Do people really use these things to dry their HAIR???? I melted the space bar and surrounding keys...fuck, if it can fry a keyboard, do you really want that on your hair???

It cost me a new keyboard in the end!

Good to hear you got it all working!!

^ Thanks, think your problem was TOT moderm as that was all I changed, the difference is unbelievable, instead of "rebooting" 10. 20. or a zillion times a day - just keeps ticking away, at far faster speeds that the piece of crap TOT supplied.

Strangely enough! I spilt beer on my keyboard last week, and now have a sticky 0, just turned it upside down and left to dry, was told some time ago, never ever use a hair dryer to dry electrical components - my sister melted a mobile phone doing this, the chappie in the shop told her it was the most common way people destroy mobile phones, let tings dry slowly, in a warm place, gives them a chance.

Mobile phones? Put em in a sealed container with half an inch of uncooked rice in the bottom and a layer of kitchen roll.

Sucks the moisture away as it evaporates.

I've rescued two that have made unfortunate forays into the toilet bowl.

Oh yes, before you do ANYTHING with a wet mobile - TAKE THE BATTERY OUT.

There is a firmware upgrade too, my original was April 2009, the latest is a July one, not sure if you need it as yours maybe already there, you need to find it on the Belkin UK site.

Also, you may find that your torrents suddenly become slow or cease completely (downloading) but the internet works fine. (usually if you leave it running overnight).

Go and check the "secrity log" on your router, you will probably find that you have been whacked with loads and loads of attempted connections, some of them appear to be DOS attacks but I am not sure, anyway, they all appear to come from the P2P torrent sharing. (they show up in your Firewall log as shit like **SMURF**, or "FLOOD" etc, usually "incoming", but mine has packed up with outgoing floods too!

If you get this problem, EXIT, (not just close) uTorrent, then either switch off the router, or reboot it, reconnect the router, then re-start the torrent program, you will probably be good for almost maximum download speed for at least another 12 hours.

I can get 6 movies a day no problem, apart from finding the time to watch them.

spent a few hours with a Zyxel yesterday , 660HT or some such - what a piece of shit - using these firmwares after tomato or openwrt highlights how limpid the factory firmwares are.

took me a while to work out that the Zyxel WPA wireless encryption does not do AES only TKIP - was not obvious , just a guess from me while trying to work out why it would not connect with WPA - what sort of knob still uses TKIP ?
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.
