Why has it got to be so damn hard to connect 2 computers!?

Damn, damn, shite, feck and blast!!!

Jeeezes H all I want to do is link my two laptops so I can share files.

Simple? You'd like to think so wouldn't you?

You've got to be kiddin' me!!

Why can't i just plug them together and get on with it...? Ooooooh no it's got to be a bloody network routed through another bloody device and then set up with a wizard and firewall accessed and protocolled and tweaked, geaked and feckin' freaked.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! I feel like a computer dunce.

I know I need a network hub, it's only took me about three hours of getting my balls busted by Microsoft to find that out, why, why...!?

    Damn shite feck and blast...

All I want to do is repair a small dent on the wing of my car

and I have to fuck about with panel beating and undercoats and fillers and all that shit that I don't understand...

Why can't I just buy a can of spraypaint and get on with it?

Wow!!! Computers and networks are complicated too (rather more complicated than spraying a car).

Hardly a perfect analogy, however I can spray a car with my eyes closed, but then I haven't got an irritating little man from the paint company in the spraybooth with me everytime I pull the trigger saying "ooooh no no no no, you can't do it like that, no no no that's far too easy, you haven't really thought about our way of doing things have you? here let me make it harder for you, it's for the best, you see we believe the best way to do it is the most difficult way, what? you don't understand? you must follow our rules, Why? because we made them.. (add Demonic Gates-esque laughter)"

Should be simple, two computers, add connection, computers recognise connection and communicate with each other, but no, I have to be a geek to do such a simple task.

It is simple, it's only you making it unnecessarily complicated.
You don't need a hub/router/firewall , only a network cable connected between their network ports.

Ok smarty pants, please explain, 'cos that's exactly what I've been trying whilst getting dry humped by Microsoft for my efforts.
Now that you know that I know jack shit, you better make it a good explaination too.

I feel your pain, reallly. I wanna direct connect a laptop and desk top. Fuck me you would think I was asking to fly to the farking moon.

As far as I am aware (and deffo NOt a computer boff), a direct link simly does not work. I eventually got a lap link cable, which took some finding.

As to the spray paint analogy, dunno. Wanting to join two computers through a direct link is not really an unheard of thing - so WHY is it so difficult? Thats a programming design issue, which should have been addressed YEARS ago.

I don't understand routers, wifi, networks, packets etc - but I don't need to - I just turn the computer on, and it picks up the wifi networks with the click of an icon. My personal belief is companies DELIBERATELY make it difficult for the average user to directly joing two computers.
    Rant over.

If the machines are reasonably modern then you can just plug each end of the LAN cable into each of the machine's ethernet ports. Each port has a green light and an orange light, if both green lights turn on then it's working. If not, then it means the cards are old and you'll have to use a crossover ethernet cable instead, which you can pick up from your local computer store.

Once you've got a proper connection follow the usual steps for setting up a network. Good luck!
you can connect computers by direct cable access on parallel port. you can also use a cross cable for this
u should remeber a rule for create a cross cable that is "1326" means attach 1 cable with 3rd of other and 2 with 6 th cable of other. have fun
The time spent making your own cross over cable might be better spent in just buying one or a hub.
Yes, it can be done. But why do you want to do it?
You could throw two wireless cards on them and make an ad-hoc network as well.
If you want to move some files, you can use sneaker net with a USB dongle. Or just swap the hard drive from one into the other.
    So.... why?
Use a crossover cable. To tell if it is a cross, look at the cable with the metal contacts facing you. The wire configuration should be white orange, orange, white green, blue, white blue, green, white brown, brown. The other end is white green, green, white orange, blue, white blue, orange, white brown, brown.
    That's a cross.
I took Cisco networking classes in college.
So I need a crossover cable, why couldn't you just say that?
I know that anyway, do you think I didn't already try google for a straight answer?
But even with that, I still have to go through a lot of BS setting the connection up.

My point is, why not make it simple, you know like connecting to wi-fi..
I have a LAN icon on my toolbar, but do you think clicking on that helps me in any way?
Do you think it tells me, go down to Maplins and buy a crossover cable and when you get back I'll be right here to help you seemlessly create the connection that you require...? NO IT DOESN'T.
It leads me off into a cyber minefield that with one false move is going to compromise the security of my computer or give it some terminal glitch.

Thankyou anyway for contributing Lom, even pity can be motivating in a roundabout way.

Cheers MtD but just looking to share occasionally rather than move the whole kit over. Think I'll stick to the dongle.

Actually I have - for example turn on my workstation when I already have my notebook on. I then get a prompt if I want to connect to the workstation - ie turn on network sharing. Course I'm assuming everyone has VISTA.

It's a rant. Get it? Yes I know I need a crossover cable, but that's not something made abundantly clear when using the network connections system offered by Microsoft, instead it is inherently complicated for the average user, such as myself. Get the point now?

Now repeat after me.. calling people with a genuine computer issue "a fucking idiot" is not big and it's not clever.
