    Irritating problem, any ideas?

My computer after some time keeps disabling my CD disk drive. I get a little icon in the tray that says disabled and when I look in explorer, it isn't there.

When i look into it further, there is this error message:-

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)"

To get my drive back, I have to restart the computer.

Any ideas what to do? Never had this problem until about five days ago.

    Any help appreciated.

You probably have a driver conflict mate.

Follow these instructions to remove any old drivers from your device manager, then reboot and everything should be bonny.

Don't worry this method is sound.

Remove Old Drivers After Upgrading to New Hardware

If you are experiencing weird issues after upgrading your hardware, or you've just upgraded to the latest hardware device and aren't seeing the performance you'd like, you might want to remove the old drivers which are still installed for the old hardware, even though you can't normally see them in device manager.
What you have to do is set a less-known flag to allow you to see non-present devices, and then launch device manager. You'll then see the old devices in the list, and can uninstall the drivers for them.
In Windows Vista, the first thing you'll need to do is open a command prompt in administrator mode. Type cmd into the start menu search box, and then use Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open in administrator mode. (You can also right-click on the command prompt and choose Run as Administrator)
Now paste in the following line:
    SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
Then type in devmgmt.msc to start up Device Manager from the administrator command prompt:

Once you are in Device Manager, go to the View menu and choose Show Hidden Devices, which will show all the device drivers including things that aren't currently installed in your computer.

Notice how I have 6 mice in the list, even though I only have two installed (and my drawing tablet). The other 3 mice are old mice that I've used until they died…. the Geek tends to wear through input devices very quickly since he never leaves the computer…

You can right-click on the driver and then choose Uninstall from the menu to remove the drivers for that old hardware.
I've found that this can resolve a lot of weird issues, and even increase performance on some machines where you've upgraded a ton of times. This isn't necessarily going to increase performance, but it's nice to have a tidy computer nonetheless."

    Dexter,
Many thanks. That did the trick. There were two sets of drivers for the one disk drive. I uninstalled the one with an exclamation mark, now everything is good.

Dexter is my fucking hero at the moment.
Googled the error code and every forum said that there was nothing I could do except re-boot my computer.

few years ago, i was utterly terrified of computers, but the puter forum is one of my favourites on here.

i am hardly very good, but feel i can resolve issues myself these days that a few years back I'd have relied on a technician to do for me.

couple of weeks ago an even more clueless friend thought me expert enough to go set up his new computer.

pure chance, could have been a defective component for all I know

and yes I was assuming that the software solution (drivers) was already exhausted by SB, but little did I know that he was totally "clueless" with a PC, my bad

I think there's enough posts to start a "Collective computer wisdom of Butterfly" thread. Luckily most people seem to get their problems solved by either ignoring him or doing completely the opposite of what he says.

    Hmmmmmm.......seems the problem isn't fixed.

Each time I play a disk, the computer creates another driver for the disk drive, so, I go back to square one.

    Any ideas?

i just disconnected it and stuck it back in.

    SB

I have had some strange old problems with stuff like that before. Things like changing USB ports for a USB item meant it had to have the drivers reinstalled everytime.

Might be time for a clean install of windows.

OK, just checked and I have the latest driver for the DVD drive.

I'm in the middle of a project and can't risk reloading windows (no disk was supplied with this computer). I'll just have to live with the problem for the time being.
