After further investigation, it looks like a power management problem.
The problem only occurs if the computer goes into standby, then powers up.
No problem if I hibernate, then come back up.

Seems in standby, the computer is not shutting off the power to the DVD drive.

Anyway, I have a work around; don't use standby. Annoying, though.

Each time I play a disk, the computer creates another driver for the disk drive, so, I go back to square one.

    Any ideas?

Funny, when I saw KW was the latest person to contribute to this thread, I thought "Nah.....don't open it. It'll just be rubbish".

Couldn't resist and I was right.

    Flounce - Encyclopedia Dramatica

A flounce post is when one must proclaim that they are leaving a community forever. These attention whores are nearly as amusing as those who use "deleting your LiveJournal" for attention. Rather than quietly leaving an LJ community, they feel they must leave a long ass, boring, nonsensical post explaining why they are so much more highly evolved than anyone else in the community. Names may be named, events may be recalled, but they are, at essence, a nice, delicious whine.

Like any good whine, flounces are varied in their history, maturity, texture, quality, bouquet and mouth feel, but all boil down to a subtle, inherent, and slightly fruity expressiveness:

Sorry the other tweak didn't hold mate. Try this one out. Hope it works.

"Force Windows to Unload DLLs from Memory (All Windows)

Windows Explorer caches DLLs (Dynamic-Link Libraries) in memory for a period of time after the application using them has been closed. This can be an inefficient use of memory on low memory systems, and may cause problems or delays for programmers developing with Windows DLL files.

Open your registry and find the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer].
Create a new sub-key named 'AlwaysUnloadDLL' and set the default value to equal '1' to disable Windows caching the DLL in memory. Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

    (Default)REG_SZ"1"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion...

    Registry Settings

    System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\
    AlwaysUnloadDLL]

    Value Name: Default

    Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)

    Value Data: (1 = enable)

Thanks a lot Dexter. I'm at work at the moment and using my computer. Can't afford for it to go down, so, I'll try this when I get home.
