Do I need these big system files?

I found these two files in the root folder of C: when I was doing a disk cleanup. I googled them, and some guys said it was possible to get rid of them if (a) you don't use the hibernate function and (b) if you have enough RAM.

Well, I don't use hibernate (it's disabled) and I've got 2GB RAM, so:

    1. Do you agree that I don't need them and can free up 4GB?

    2. If not, why?

    3. If so, how can I get rid of them? The google answer (Control Panel > Power Options > Hibernate > disable > reboot) didn't get rid of hibersil.sys.

    ---

Edit: sorry, should have said XP SP2.

    1. No
    2. Because pagefile.sys is needed, hibernation enabled or not

I ran a disk cleaner and I told it to delete the hibernation files.
My pagefile is still there but the hiberfil has gone

But if LOM says 'no' then I would listen to him

I heard that the best thing to do was to number all your operating system files and then delete all the odd numbers, supposedly really speeds up your pc, not sure if cmn was right though, anyway got to go got more black helicopters hovering outside my window shooting at the flying pigs

You can get rid of it if you turn virtual memory off first. Only really an option if you've got at least 1GB of RAM, preferably 2GB and not to be considered if you run memory intensive programs (Photoshop, etc)

There are a few thoughts on virtual memory when you have over 2GB RAM.
Take a look at some of the links returned from this search
2GB RAM virtual memory - Google Search
I've never run windows without a swap file (virtual memory) but have been told by some that have they think it improves performance. if you go through the above search results you will find differing opinions. Pick one you like.

You can always give it a whirl and if it is better cool if not change it back.

What you could do is to reduce the amount for the page file - your 2 GB is anyhow to large for the RAM you have - go down to 1 GB and that's it - will reduce the hyberfil as well.

Control Panel - Advanced - System - Ssystem properties - Advanced - Virtual Memory. Once there you could also have the page-file on a second or third HD as this should increase the speed of the first HD.

    No, don't do it.

I found that it really destroys Windows performance. You have to leave the virtual memory settings at "let windows manage virtual memory" and it will give you 2x physical RAM.

I have 2GB physical RAM and noticed that WinXP has no clue what to do with that much memory and effectively always uses less than 1.5. So I made VM really small because I heard turning it off will degrade performance. But a few weeks later I was wondering why my system was dog slow, and that turned out to be it. Set it back to auto and it went back to normal performance.

Don't ask me why though. VM is a tricky beast, and it's not just used only like a sort of RAM on the hard disk - it's also used for a few performance optimizations.

Let it be. The hiber file you don't need, as others have pointed out.

    Really?

I don't need help fucking up my computer - I'm very capable in that regard. When it comes to unfucking, however, I admit I'm pretty clueless.
