    A beasty pc system

Now my pc stuff is all antique and i would have thought it was time to throw it in the bin, now i generally use 2 pcs and this is my beasty one which I thought would need upgrading as most of it is 2 to 4 years old already.

So yesterday i was down Lotus in Pattaya looking at what I thought was the latest beasty stuff, I mean I want to keep this beasty really good, hmmm, doesn't seem to be much on the upgrades, basically going by lotus I have the top end pc already, infact way over most of the top end ones.

So why is lotus selling old crap? And what would be the beasty you would want?

This one I got two dvd burners, 3 hard drives, plus all the other rubbish and think it is antique.

Ive just rebuilt my pc this year (Oct) and thought i was building a beast, within 6 weeks it was out of date, but it can still handle any game thrown at it on full settings and will do me for another 12 months at least, only thing im gonna add is clear raptor 150 when this install gets a bit shaky

What are you going to use it for DD?

If it's purely for Teakdoor and not gaming then you don't need to get too excited. Just a couple of monitors and a decent graphics card to run them. 3GB of RAM since XP can't use anymore than that and possible a RAID external E-Sata enclosure.

Maybe a nice water cooling system for Thailand as well.

Errrr.... DD, I think you go to Tescos to buy nappies and yoghurt, maybe try going to a computer shop next time

(((BTW, I just built myself a new computer desk, but I'm not going to show it, cos you'll take the piss)))

Tempted to go for a new quad core machine myself. But a reckon the current Core 2 duo will be good for another 12 months, by which time prices will have dropped a lot.

I'd especially like solid state disks and I reckon they'll be a lot more affordable this time next year.

    No.

Vista can use 4GB's as can Linux. Not sure if it's just Vista 64 or not though. I think plain old vanilla 32bit Vista can as well.

From what I've read only 64 bit systems can use the extra RAM.

^ It's still better to have two paired sticks of memory than one large and one small. I would just keep the 4 and xp will just use 3. It's not like RAM is expensive.

Very smart. It will give you an opportunity to upgrade to 4Gb later on when you switch over to Vista.

Or sound recording and running effects. Back in Blighty I have a Pentium 4 and 2 gig RAM. Way too slow already.

If its heavy graphics editing...it seems like a nice video card would be important as well. Its been a few years since I've done in, but I had a video card with a meg of memory on it to do renderings for advertisements from CAD models.

I costed one with 512 on it. I think that'll be enough.

Has anybody seen the physics cards. Not sure what they are for exactly but they are made by graphics card companies some sort of add on processor or something like that.
Can't remeber the name now. need to have a look.

Photoshop is RAM and processor intensive, and can't really make use of the graphics card (since they're designed to accelerate 3d apps).

You only need a monster of a card like that if you'll be doing some heavy 3d rendering, in other words working with something other than Photoshop.

Even for fps gaming (Call of Duty 4 etc), something like a 256 mb Nvidia GeForce 8600GT is what most people get and are satisfied with it.

Are you getting a quad core processor? That's the best for keeping a lot of apps open at the same time. Q6600 2.4 with an Intel 975XBX2 mobo is great performance for price.

And definitely go with 4 gigs of DDR2 800mhz RAM now so you'll have it when you migrate to Vista. 4 x 1 or 2 x 2.

XP Pro SP2 will see it as 3.25 gigs, the BIOS will see it as 4 gigs.

Faster RAM gives more room to overclock via RAM timings in the BIOS. You can take the Q6600 from 2.4 up to 2.9 pretty easily. No need for liquid cooling.
