Arrow So, hard drives can just die can they?

A Welshman I know recently lost all the data on his hard drive and couldn't get it back, despite taking it to Phantip.

Another Welshman I know who's in China just lost all his data from his HD.

I once plugged in the cable for my HD1 into my HD2 and it made a very bad smell and didn't work but I took it to Phantip and they changed the casing and sorted it out for 300 baht, and it's still ok - despite having been dropped - however it does sometimes fail to eject and I do get the device removal box appearing sometimes when I shouldn't.

Can hard drives just 'die' for no reason and at any time?

I better start learning how to encode data onto disc for further back up - I think I can do it with Toast Titanium.

Should I burn data onto DVD or CD?

That's a keyboard problem, not a hard drive problem.

DVD has much more capacity. Why not a removable backup hard drive?

I've just had a Welshman give me back a drive that I thought was poked in perfect working order. Weird!

If your HDD dies and you need to get the data off you can try putting in a freezer for a while. Suprisingly succesessful, do a google search for the exact procedure.

I'll try that. Bought a 500GB USB harddrive and he began to be reluctive to work properly then just doesn't allow me to access datas on it at all. Only 3 weeks old and full of "comics", that's a shame.

Bought it for ~5000B in Switzerland, I'll see next time I'm there. Still under warranty so if it doesn't work I'll get it changed.

The 500gig ones seems to be the most likely to play up. My mate had problems with one recently and he was able to get the majority of the data back using the freezer method.

I've got an 80Gb one that went tits up last night. The fridge cutting on & off upset it a bit and now it seems dead.

I've started to use MozyHome Remote Backup. The problem with most backups to external devices is that you store the backups in the same place that you store the computer. so in the event of fire, flood, theft etc you will lose your backups as well as your computer.

If you have less than 2 Gig to backup (just data, don't backup your entire system) then you can have a free account, or if your needs are greater then you can use MozyHome Unlimited for just $4.95 per month.

Mozy Online Backup: Simple, Automatic, Secure

    What is Mozy?

Mozy is a simple, smart, and economic way to protect your data. You simply install it on your computer, set it up, and then never worry about data loss again.
    Specifically, Mozy:
    • Is simple to set up
    • Performs backups automatically in the background
    • Encrypts all files on your computer before transfer
    • Performs incremental backups
    • Backs up only blocks that have changed
    • Backs up open/locked files
Try it out. It's a simple way to protect all of your data.

I bought one of those backup external hardrive things, and the fucking thing failed with all my data on there. POS. I bought another laptop as another backup. Decent quality laptops seem more reliable.

Good quality hardrives can last. I've got a mini Ipod (a 4G micro drive) that's been running 24/7 for 27 months now.

This is apparently what you have to do

Someone posted (somewhere) that they took their HD into Pantip and they changed the case (or external PCB). Does anyone know where in Pantip they do that?

I think scampy was talking about a usb case - which are available everywhere.

    DVD's lose their dye.

I always buy Taio Yuden blanks because they have the best dye on them
