I was looking at the E8400 Duo (3Ghz). About 8,000 Baht.

I won't be playing any games, but I do need a good graphics display. I'm getting a 19" Samsung LCD monitor (don't know the model number offhand. About 8,000 Baht), but I always worry because I see so many LCD monitors that have a really shit picture.

    My budget is 35,000 Baht.

Use mine for gaming and web design, when gaming i have 2 8800 gts in sli, when im working i have them out of sli running duel 19" monitors which makes life easy for running photoshop, dreamweaver, flash and all the rest etc.
I usually have around 5 apps open and a test server and so need a big rig for that.
I do intend to add another monitor at some point.

On a earlier comment a current 32bit pc will use 3.25 gb of ram, you need 64 bit to use any higher, we are now selling 64bit 8gb rigs by the bucket load at work and would say the current trend at work is for min of 4gb for a decent machine.
I have 4gb in mine just to keep the duel channel working. But ram is cheap as chips now, for a 1gb stick you looking around 10-15 quid so its no massive saving by going a stick down, not sure on the prices in Thailand thoe.

I already tried to tell him that
You sure did! I just wanted to join the chorus.

Marmite- I finally settled on a 21" widescreen Samsung 215tw (black) with the PVA panel type and really like it. It was about 14-15,000?

Most of the 19" LCDs have the cheaper panel (TN), and the common complaint is that solid colors display a gradient from left to right.

I tried a few cheapo TN screens and could see what people were on about. Hotspots, etc. But honestly, it's not that bad. I've done dev work with a lot worse.

PVA panels, if you can afford them, are definitely better though.

Anyway, I found these links to be helpful:

X-bit labs - LCD Monitors Buyer's Guide: Fall 2007 (lcd guide fall 2007)

LCD Panel Technology Explained - S-IPS, S-PVA, MVA and TN (concise explanation of panel types)

35k baht is not a lot to work with for building a beasty system, if you have to buy a decent monitor out of that as well.

    You need about 8k-10k more.

I sense from you that discussing this with your boss might be a 'prompem'.

I hate widescreen monitors. My programmer will have one for test purposes, but I will have a proper shaped one.

I don't think they're available in Fortune Town.

Honestly, I was reluctant to evolve as well

But 21" wide is just a 19" monitor with extra space on either side.

Unfortunately, you're not going to find the better panels in non-wide. It's all moved on to widescreen format now.

    Discontinued for some time.

If they have it at Fortune, let me know. I do agree it is a lovely monitor.

One month is hardly a long time.

The problem here is that you never know what the shops have available. I'll have to take notes the next time I'm there.

I really think you have to go widescreen, ok there still are people on 800 wide, but they are 3rd world countries farmers and that which you are not really trying to attract to your website, I am gonna make a mongeral out of some of the bits I have and buying new stuff, one pc needs the crappiest graphics card in the world but a bit of ram, one needs to be a beasty which is mine bit more ram and a wide screen monitor, but chuck out one of the hdd and use an external for spare for all of them, another needs to be windows and needs more ram, a better board and more usb ports.
