Thet, the Novatel modems on ebay also look like they are tied to Sprint.

I was reading up on this only today.
I found someone who got it to work.

Something about copying the ESN to the new SIM

No. The ESN doesn't reside in the SIM, it's in the phone.

(The AirCard is a phone without keyboard and display but with a PCMCIA or USB interface).

The operator lock or SPL (ServiceProviderLock) is a function in the phones software to reject SIM cards where the provider unique number doesn't match what the phone want to see.

Now, take a SIM card from DTAC, change a few digits so it matches Sprint.
Then you wont be able to connect to DTAC anymore...

You must remove the lock in the phones software so it accepts all operators. You can't hack it in the SIM card.

I just read it again and I think he meant SSN.

Fine for things like standard web surfing / email, etc.

I think things like skype will also have the same problem though.

Definitely, well according to him anyway - and he knows what he's doing with PCs (or at least claims to! ).

I just checked on the Hutch website (cat is only in thai) and it says UNLIMITED internet access 999 baht/month.

There's going to be a few disappointed customers

The CAT site says 790 per month unlimited.

(But, then again, I don't read Thai very well....)

Does anyone know what coverage they have on EVDO ?

Thanks BH but that is for CDMA which is 153kbps, I am only interested if I can get EVDO and use it for P2P

^That's the location of their antennae. EVDO is available in Phrae but you'll need to call them and give them your exact location to find out if it reaches you. (Ms. B just called the Phrae office....)

So EVDO is available but there is only one way to access it and that's via the Sierra 580 Aircard which only fits a laptop.
No usb modems or evdo phones are available at present.

Is this the same as WCDMA, that many recent Nokia phones do?

Nope WCDMA is not the same as EV-DO

BTW I have just had a reply from Hutch and EV-DO does support P2P and Azureus Torrents.

Do they offer any hardware other than the Aircard? An Ethernet modem would be nice....

You can fit the aircard to a desktop using either a pci-pccard adaptor or using a router.

How do you use the aircard with a router? My desktop machine doesn't have a pci bus and my router doesn't have a card slot.
