^ i read on the other channel that the Phuket CAT shop have a variety of different modems for EVDO, maybe worth calling them...
Thetyim, did you ever get them pinned down on the monthly cost? When Ms. B called she claims she was told 12,900 baht per month. But, I think that's the initial cost of the AirCard, right?
The CAT website says 790 pcm, the CAT guy told me 590 pcm.Originally Posted by buad hai
The Hutch website says 999 pcm but if you buy some equipment from them you can get up to 12 months free air time but I am not sure if this applies to the 580 aircard.
That might be the twelve month deal.Originally Posted by buad hai

By the way I have a brand-new EVDO modem (USB type) which can be used with CAT CDMA. Since it is connected to your PC over the USB port you can use it with any computer (both laptop as well as desktop). It comes complete with USB cable, headset (for voice calls), user manual and software CD.
Since I do not need it any more (I have a good ADSL connection now) I can sell it for just $200.-
I am based in Udon Thani, North East Thailand.

Answering your questions here.
It is a Chinese brand.
And it comes without R-UIM card.
You can use your own R-UIM card that you can buy from the Operator (CAT CDMA).
It is not opertor locked.
So you can use it on any CDMA network in any country, no problem.
Can you be more specific about brand and model numberOriginally Posted by Alex
CAT now have a usb aircard for desktops and laptops.
Its made by C-motech and the model number is CCU-650.
I called into the CAT office in Khon Kaen yesterday and asked the guy if i could borrow a card to test the service, he said yes no problem but i need a thai gf or wife to bring her ID card. So today i go back to the office with bint in tow.
Cannot borrow card, can test here in office but to test outside need to purchase and pay contract. wankers, do they think they will win sales by tactics like this? Not from from guys like me, maybe some dumb fcoker might fall for this kind of stonewalling shite but not me.
So knowing that I'm not interested in this service I proceed to waste as much of this guys time as possible, just to return the favour of making me do an extra trip back there today.
The device plugs into any usb port and has some software that needs to be installed first. the guy at the office had to call bangkok to activate the service and it was live within 5 minutes.
There is no SIM card in these aircards, many were thinking that was the case before but it seems that is not the case. The range from a cell tower up to 6km will give good signal using the very small aeriel on the card. a larger aerial is available to give 10 km distance from the nearest tower but the speed will be reduced.
I did some tests on speedtest.net to NY and London and the speeds were similar at 125kbps download and 18 kbps upload.
I noted that the speeds on adslthailand.com speed tester was about 200kbps download and 9kbps upload.(that website is worthless, but it demonstrates the pathetic upload performance)
I enquired why the upload was slow, the top guy in the office said that for this service they concentrate on getting good download speed and the upload speed service will be improved soon.
I wonder if they realise how stupid they make themselves sound?
The cost for the aircard is 10,990 and there are 2 data packages available.
one is a limited service of 20 or 25 hours or whatever for 590 baht and the other is 790 per month unlimited use.
Some guys over on TV are saying now that the aircard can be used with the packages that include free airtime minutes and sms messages, they are wrong, you cannot.
I noticed my opera browser returning speeds fo about 5-6 Kbps when opening bloomberg.com, that wasnt bad but I want to test the thing out in the countryside and not in the city 200 meters for a big CDMA tower.
So it looks that that ends my interest in this product, i hope other have better luck....
Bump....
Well, it looks like CAT CDMA 2000 EV-DO is going to be my only broadband option. TT&T refuses to provide service at my new house and TOT says they have no open Internet ports in that area.
Anyone out there actually using EV-DO from CAT?
I hate the thought of having to use a USB modem because that means that my PC will have to do the routing for the home network. It would be much nicer if I could get a EV-DO modem with an Ethernet port. These products are available, but not from CAT. And, it is still unclear to me if a modem bought from a different source will work with CAT's service.
bump,
whats the state of play with this ?
I'm looking at connecting laptop to internet this way for mobility and use in the sticks .
aircard or GPRS / EDGE capable phone ,
who's got what and most importantly what works ?
looking for unlimited package , prefer pre-paid but post paid possible
thanxs in advance![]()
^CAT recently announced that they are abandoning their CDMA network....
^ Any reasons given? Are they abandoning in favour of something else or just giving up?
From the Post...

telecomasia.net
(Bangkok Post via NewsEdge) CAT Telecom is preparing to abandon CDMA technology for its money-losing mobile-phone service and migrate to the GSM system that is in more widespread use throughout the world.
The state telecom enterprise has held talks with cellular partner Hutchison and with the two operators holding CAT concessions, DTAC and True Move, and all agreed that switching to GSM was the right idea, said a senior CAT executive who asked not to be named.
CAT provides the Hutch CDMA service in 25 central provinces including Bangkok in a joint venture with Hutchison under CAT Wireless Multimedia.
However, the Hutch service has managed to attract only about 700,000 customers in a mobile market of 54 million.
Huawei Technology last year completed a 7.2-billion-baht ($228 million) expansion of the CDMA system to allow CAT to offer nationwide coverage, but the Chinese firm is locked in a dispute with CAT over fines for late delivery of the system.
The expanded network infrastructure would not go to waste because it can be adapted to the GSM platform.
The executive said CAT had concluded that continuing to use CDMA technology would lead to mounting losses because most of the world had now shifted to GSM technology, although CDMA is still popular in the United States and Japan.
True buys Hutchison assets for THB 4.35 billion
Friday 31 December 2010
Thai communications firm True has signed the agreement to buy Hutchison's mobile business in Thailand.
True subsidiary Real Move will buy a 92.5 percent stake in Hutchison Wireless MultiMedia Holdings for THB 4.35 billion.
Real Move will also buy network holding company BFKT for THB 1 as well as some associated subsidiaries which will also be acquired for THB 1 each.
Following the acquisition, BFKT will continue to lease its CDMA network equipment to CAT Telecom and continue to maintain the network.
True will focus on providing national HSPA services to CAT.
Real move would be reseller of services of the mobile network that Real Move would purchase from CAT.
Hutchison CAT Wireless Multimedia will continue to market CAT CDMA services but not expand the service and migrate customers to HSPA within two years.

Out of interest, I got a DTAC pre-paid SIM a couple of weeks ago and it seemed to me, despite thrashing the Sky website all day checking the cricket score, that they don't charge for what seems to be Edge internet.
At least my balance didn't go down at all when I checked it.
Is this right, or are they just piloting this to attract customers?
