    Uninstalled Microsoft Office...

    ...installed Libra Office.

Just sick of bloody Microsoft and their demands for money. When I buy a laptop, I want the s/w to work, not demand more money every few months/year or so...

I used Libra Office before when I had Ubuntu installed, and it was fine.

    Mostly, I'm doing word docs.

Anybody use Libra or something similar? Any thoughts/advice?

My HP isn't very old, maybe 6 months, but the fukers just put a short term license on then want more money... Obviously, they stop you from using the installed s/w, so I've just deleted it. I already had to pay for the bloody o/s that also stopped working after about 3 months... I will not, I repeat, will not, be buying any Microsoft s/w or products with Microsoft s/w every again...

I don't like Libra as much, but I'll get used to it I suppose.

I just wanna buy a laptop and for the applications to work for the life of that machine...

^it's their pricing policy, RS. The license should be with the manufacturer on the machine I buy, should not come down to me... If I paid an extra 20 quid for the laptop for lifetime OS and office I'd be happy. They're just too fukin greedy...

Just dump all the trial software that comes pre-installed and put your own stuff on there. There are good deals on office for students if you have one lying around or for corporate employee licences if you work for a big company (around £10).

^I did that with the OS, but these licenses are annual, I don't wanna pay online, so it's a pain in the arse, and takes ages, deleting it then buying one more then installing that, every year...

Yes. All that...but most certainly it's about universal control. As they're associated and with most everything.
I believe there is a growing movement to have nothing to do with Microsoft/Windows......there is a wealth of alternatives today.

    Bastards. Fuk 'em.

I've been using an illegit copy of Office 2000 on many OS' for years, never had a problem. There is a fix to make it legal too, get updates and all. Office.org, Abbyword both work fine.

had my old Aspire cleaned up and reloaded with illegit W7 and Office 2007 for the princely sum of about 900bt....no probs with office but can't get rid of the "this copy of windows is not genuine" message that turned up after 30 days".
No qualms about using it as original SW before the blue screen of death turned up was bought and paid for ( I lost all the discs when a step kid borrowed my bag). Could find a key to register W7 I suppose but too frickin lazy.

I hate those. They did away with them for XP. Who wants XP any more. There is a fix called WGA, windows genuine advantage, that contains three dlls you place in the system files. They work only when they're new. Eventually MS traces them and zaps them through your Internet. Win7 is pretty well protected.

Find and download (torrent) a program called ncleaner. It will let you tweak and disable Windows popups.

There isn't a key hat will work. You need to fool the OS into thinking it's a pre-installed version using a prog whose name I have forgotten and remove the activation nagging with RemoveWAT

    [OUTDATED / UNSUPPORTED] RemoveWAT.

thx ..did search once but consensus of some blogs was that a key that worked would be one that was used and likely MS would find it somehow on your machine and potentially screw it up.

ouch went to that blog...too scary WAAY above my pay scale...

LibreOffice works fine, except when you need to share documents which have been heavily formatted in Word, which can be a real fucking pain in the arse (not sure if that's just docx or doc as well). Also comments work a little better in Word than in LibreOffice and none (as far as I can tell) of the shortcuts work when you're typing in a non-Roman alphabet, which is another ballache.
