    Extending receiving range of wifi

Need to figure out a way to get wifi signals over long distances. Bought a WIfly-city 30g but am having difficulties in getting drivers. Especially for my version of OSX. Stop laughing Harry.

I would love it to work on both Mac OSX 10.7.5 and Windows as I have a small archer that runs my pastor protocol from my SSB radio.

I would also buy different kit for each system if that is possible. I know you can buy specialist boat stuff but was hoping for a more modest range extension for a modest price. Any ideas.

    Cheers

Didn't realize he was on a boat, thought he meant extend wifi he already has.

    Park boat closer to shore.

And how is that going to extend Wifi?

It's basically just an overpriced Apple wifi hotspot.

It's not that at all. I has no inherent modem/internet function at all.
It can do several clever things though, one is a wifi extender.
Plug it in at the limit of your current wifi it hooks into that and it will extend the range another 50 meters or so,

You're the expert, tell him what product to buy that will support Windows and MacOS.

    I've never heard of them.

The Alfa does a great job, but it's not industrial strength. What would you expect for that price?

All of the Ubuquiti AirMax products have an ethernet connector so no need for any os drivers. I'd go for a Rocket or a Bullet with a 10dBi omnidirectional antenna.

*snigger* It's like saying that you never heard of Dell or nVidia.

A shelfwarmer from 2008, ridiculously priced up so that you can't resist to buy it now when it is heavily discounted.
I have a bridge in case you are interested..

    WTF are you talking about?

Looking it up, it's an eight-year old niche company that repacks Atheros kit, and its IPO raised $30.5 million dollars.

What sort of twat would compare that with Dell ($25Bn) and NVidia ($8Bn) ?!

    Jesus man, get a grip.

    Satellite broadband.
Just forget your old provider and try a different approach.

the problem on a boat is the unstable platform - to get better wifi reception relies on better directional antennas which you cannot use unless you have run aground.

why not just go for a 3g/4g modem/hotspot - your free wifi in the marina will be badly managed anyway with all the trendy apple owners facetiming each other

Ubiquity has made some great kit over the years - Highly customisable and versatile and not too expensive - I think they all run openwrt now also with a custom GUI

the price of the stabilizer and tracking kit and the power consumption would freak him out
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

ok, I'll remember for future discussions that you don't know companies by their reputation but by their turnover.
Does "best in their market segment" mean anything to you?

That's why I recommended an omnidirectional hi-gain antenna instead of a directional yagi or a dish antenna both which are used with Ubiquiti stations all over the world when building long distance point-to-point wifi links.

A Rocket or a Bullet with the omni antenna will be so many times better than what he has now or what Harry googled up.

Yes, I had a gander, they look OK. Something to consider if I ever need a bump.

What does that have to do with anything?

most WIFI extender are crappy chinese made equipment

got one working from Netgear, it's ok and it works, but a pain in the ass to setup with all their silly wizards while I wanted was direct access to their config menu

sadly, no regedit in those devices
