There is no perfect answer to your question...

The Chromebook will do the job, it's also good for faffing around on the internet and writing emails.

A laptop will do the job, it's also good work faffing about on the internet, doing some work, writing emails, etc.

A tablet will do the job, it's also very portable, great for pics, social media and multimedia, as well as faffing around on the internet.

    These devices overlap in functionality.

The only thing you need is a decent wifi card and an HDMi output. They almost all have them...

The Apples are good, but don't play nice with other devices...

    Easy...

Decide upon what functions you need then go for the device that suits. If it's just gonna be used for wifi connection to your TV, TD and that's about it then a cheap laptop is great - but don't expect to watch stuff on the laptop screen with great results. & don't expect the larger, heavy laptop devices with shorter battery lives to be much fun taking to starbucks or the beach...

Just seen this for sale. Spoken with the guy but he's off to Chaing Mai.

Latest version. Model XE303C12. Includes hard case, quality carrying case & complete instruction book. Paid 10,000 Baht total. Sell for 6,500 Baht. Must have wi-fi available to use a Chromebook effectively. I really didn't grasp this when I purchased it. Indeed, it works as intended with wi-fi at hand.

Any members in Chiang Mai willing to check it out and purchase for me?

    Here's a review:

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2412006,00.asp

You can't use applications on the desktop like you can a normal PC (anything you do must be in the cloud), so no saving to the desktop, no word docs or pics to read/look at on the desktop... It's a bit different from a 'normal' laptop, but it connects to the internet by wifi and has an HDMi output:

In terms of features, the selection is surprisingly robust. On the back of the laptop along the hinge are an HDMI out port, one USB 3.0 port, and a USB 2.0 port. On the left edge of the machine is a combination headphone and microphone jack, and a card reader that supports various SD formats (SD/SDHC/SDXC). Dongles are also available for Ethernet (via USB) and VGA output.

Because the Chromebook Series 3 is so dependent upon Internet connectivity, it has built in 802.11 a/b/g/n WLAN, and Bluetooth 3.0 for connecting to headsets, printers, or other peripherals. Also on the back of the laptop is a SIM card slot, which is only used in the 3G-equipped model, which is available for $329.99 (direct), with Verizon 3G. Verizon offers 100MB of free data per month, but you can also purchase extra data as needed.

I can tell you what you need:

    1. If you like computers, you need a PC in the room where you do most of your computing, and spend most of your time.

    2. Then, you just need to buy a laptop with a good size screen. And I think that ASUS makes a decent one, which is what I have.

    3. Then you just need to buy a 24 inch LCD display, very light weight. You can put this near the Sala and set it up any time you want to work outside, or watch TV outside, or watch anything outside.

    4. Next, the most important point, you need a Nexus 7.2 for when you find your big LCD too inconvenient to carry around, like when you leave the house.

    5. Here is the reasoning: Now that I am used to a huge screen, every time I switch back to a normal screen, I feel uncomfortable. I also like to open about 4 or 5 separate windows, so that I can watch different programs at the same time, or opens spreadsheets and TV at the same time when I need to watch protests or something.

    6. Obviously, when i go outside I don't want to carry around something that is as big as a tablet PC or something, so this is when I find the Nexus 7.2 to be everything my doctor ordered.

TRY THIS combination, and you will see that I am right.

The only thing I don't have is some way to connect my big LCD screen to the computer WITHOUT wires. This would be really handy. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I watch wiziwig etc everything free through my Mac book via its thunderbolt output going through an hdmi converter cost £1.85p delivered off eBay.

What ever you buy cheap mate don't forget it's gonna be down on the chip and ram, are you really gonna be happy watching a cheap buffering device?

You don't need to spend much to do what you wanna do Charley. 15,000 baht max will get you a decent low to mid end laptop and remember if it is down on chip and ram it will be up on battery life, unlike this thing I'm using that lasts 2 hours.

As Betty pointed out what you want to look for is a laptop that is on Windows 7 with no touchscreen and preferably with an i3 processor, which is the lowest of the new intel chips but fast enough.

Go ask for those 3 things in your new laptop and you will have a goodun

Are you talkin about a 10 foot interface?
    I get these two confused.
But I am talkin about puttin the monitor one place and the laptop another place, and then not using wires to connect the two, but just usin wireless.

Nige. If it's that fookin' good, how come you/I can't get in touch on SKYPE?

Dillie. My mate agrees with you. He thinks the laptops might be using Windows 8?

This is so you can carry it around with you, from place to place, as you sit in different places throughout your house, or maybe you just want to sit on the back lawn, or maybe out by the curb at the street talkin to the neighbors!

    That is why.

And, say you want to have some of those neighbors over for a beer, but they say they want to watch some porn, but you don't want to have your wife sit there with you while you watch porn with the neighbors, well then you can just take your laptop out there on the grass somewhere and open some beer, and watch your porn on that huge LCD screen.

Or, maybe you want to go sit up on the roof to do some spreadsheets because it is a nice night out, but very hot, and I always sit on the roof with my laptop when it is steamin hot. Then you will need your giant 24 inch LCD screen so that you can open about 4 spreadsheets, and one porn window, all at the same time.

    Thant is why.
Believe me, it is nice to have.
You just need to do a bit of wiring so that you will have a power outlet in the places you intend to be sitting in the near future.

    I don't get it.

Are you saying that you were banned from TVF until like 30 years from now?
I didn't know they could do that.

I just have a HDMI out socket on the laptop, and I want to connect to an LCD TV. So I guess that is no problem.

What you say is already what I am using.

I have the ASUS laptop I bought in January, with an i3, a good size display, 2 GB ram, and it only cost me about 16,000 Baht. It is the ASUS with the white case.

Very nice, and it shipped with Windows 8.0, which I upgraded to 8.1. 8.1 is better than windows 7, and this computer has no touch screen.

I have 8.1 on here. all windows 8 is, is windows 7 with an extra interface suitable for touchscreens. An interface I never use and this is a touchscreen.

So tell me spam, what do you use the on that windows 8 screen ?

I think you need to clarify your question.

Or at least add another word in the right place.

(This is the problem with Windows 7, it keeps dropping words from sentences at random times and places.)
