    Tablet? Laptop?

I have wireless at home and sometimes sit outside in the sala watching TV.
I would like to be able to plug in a device and sometimes watch through my TV.
Also be able to connect to other things on the internet.
So, I think it would need some speed/memory?

    What would you recommend?
I don't want to break the bank!

    I got a 14" windows 8 touchscreen laptop. I wish I'd bought a decent tablet instead.

Do not buy a touchscreen laptop - it is pointless, and at a low price point you get a crap screen... Look for a tablet with a nice screen; it makes a lot of difference watching, films, sport, etc.

The 10" Sony xperia Z tablet has a nice screen. The apple iPads have nice screens. The Google Nexus 10" has a nice screen. Pop down to powerbuy, check out the different ones and see what you like.

Tablets and laptops have different functions and work better in different areas; for the uses you mentioned, a tablet is better.

It'd be nice to have a quad core porcessor with 2 gb of ram.

    ^^ ...

In my defence, I bought it for the missus, but she didn't want it... Now it's mine.

^ watching tv, downloading while browsing through various internet sites; can get laggy on a 1 gb ram dual core machine. Why take the risk?

You want to look at the net or watch movies stored on your device on the TV screen?

What devices do you have now?
    Is your TV wifi enabled?

I do what you are asking for with an Ipad and an Airport express.
But you could do it with something as simple as a cable and a dev ice with HDMI out..

I just bought the kids back home a samsung chromebook each , only 180 quid too. They're on Chrome's own o/s and virtually virus proof.

They have ipads already, so these will do for their homework.

It does have it's limitations but at the price and what you and probably most use a laptop for Charley, great value.

Here's one compared to a 900 pounds more expensive Macbook air

It's an interesting niche, Charles - many different divices would do the job. I'd go for the tablet (maybe a Nexus 10, but also the Kindle Fire HD has a nice screen and easily links to lots of movie/TV content), but a laptop or chromebook would work - see what screen you like best if you're gonna be using it mostly for TV.

OK. I'll try and be a bit more precise...

I have free UK TV link (stop laughing) and a link to documentary programmes, I would also like to stream Wiziwig.
I don't want to download any films.
Now, the processor has to be fast enough to do this job through my wifi and connect to my TV.
I would also want to use skype, TD etc...

    So, what do I buy?
    Cheers me dears!

Cheap laptops have crap screens... For the same price, tablet screens are better. If you're moving around, inside, outside, Starbucks, beach, on a train, etc, then a tablet is easy, and has a nice screem (just make sure you have enough memory - don't bother asking Dillinger about this, he has recently made a rather bad error in this departemnt... )

OK, well, Apple's will be a pain in the arse connecting with anything; have a couple of friends who wanted to do exactly what you are asking, they got faffed off with the iMacs and just bought normal laptops.

Presumably, most devices will have an HDMi output (excluding stupid iDevices), so that's not an issue. Wizwig does buffer, and can be slow, so a faster processor with more RAM will help.

The laptops, i3 or i5 with 2g or more likely 4bg of RAM will be fine.

The tablets mostly have quadcore 1.5ghz+ processors with 2gb of RAM, that's fine too.

Either will do the job. The tablets are more portable and have better screens per buck. The laptops have more work related functionality and apps.

I do a lot of wizwig on my cheap laptop. I wish I had bought a tablet at the same price instead with an HDMi output to a nice big screen tv... I'd go for a sony xperia z and a sony bravia tv because the work well together and upscale sd to hd better than anything else out there. But, even a Sansung will do the job. A chromebook would do the job too, but often their RAM is limited to 1gb.

Processor speed has little to do with it nowdays.

An Ipad and an Apple Airport express will let you stream web content to a dumb (no wifi) tv using your home wifi network.

Or a tablet with a hdmi out jack and a cable

Or buy an wifi enabled tv.

^ If you are going to use a hdmi cable to a dumb tv, ram and processor dont really matter.
    Any mainstream platform will do.
3 or 4 hundred for a tablet, a few bucks for a cable.

If you want wireless, whatever an ipad costs and about 200 for the airport express

I paid 16,000 baht for my i3 HP with 4gb ram, it's fine, but the screen is crap for watching sport/tv programs on; it's also small for that at 14". The internet connection, speed, beffering, etc is fine; everything is good, but the screen is poor which is a pain. I got a touchscreen which means it's even crapper than a non-touchscreen.

That's the problem with laptops, you probably need to pay 25,000 for a nice screen. But, if you're only using it to connect to a wifi network then the laptop is fine. The latest i3 and i5 have Haswell chips which add to battery life and graphics. Just make sure, you don't bother getting a touchscreen, so Windows 7 would work just as well (maybe better) than windows 8. You can pay 20,000 baht, but check around for the screen specs, the higher the better... See them in action if possible.

    Good luck.

The tablet, such as a Nexus 10 is cheaper and will have a great screen and an HDMi output (mini version, but connects right into your tv too), so it does the same as the laptop. But, it will be more portable and a better device to watch stuff on...

Necron. My TV aint dumb, it speaks to me!

Outside in the 'gazebo' (just for Arry) I have a rather large Samsung flat TV.
I will be using the Tablet or Laptop through my wireless connection via a HDMI cable purely for watching wiziwig/ UKTV or streamed documentaries.
I will be using the appliance without the TV for Skype/ TD etc...

    A laptop or tablet?
    Which fookin one?
    Rough price?

    C'mon chaps, help me.

I put that into Google and it said "Hall, it is also very healthy. Despite the Pennane and roof holes or patches.".

So basically you want to watch videos in a healthy hall with holes in the roof?

    What if it rains?

    Arry. Let me help you.
This Gazebo is still very strong and intact, even though it appears to be unsteady and the roof has holes here and there!

Now, would you go for a laptop or a tablet?

^nexus 10 is nice, and easy, about 15,000 baht; not easy to get... A new Nexus 10 is coming out, but the standard Nexus 10 is still very good and will do the job well. In theory, you have to buy the Nexus online from google:

    https://play.google.com/store/device..._10_16gb&hl=en

But, Panthip plaza, MBK (take great care at MBK...), and the computer malls at Central may have them.

In that case a laptop is easier, imho. But, you may miss the flexibility and portability of a tablet at some point.

Pretty much any laptop will do the job; I like HP (see link), but many brands are ok; Dell, Toshiba, ASUS, Acer, Fujitsu, etc.

You can get a machine for 15,000 baht. If you find an i3 Haswell processor with 4gb of ram for about 15,000 baht then you're laughing. You could likely pay less (from 12,000 baht) and get a machine to do the job, but it might have a poorer wifi card and even be missing the HDMi output (you need that!), so take care with the cheaper options.

As Dillinger said, the Chromebook is cheap and nice; it'll do your wifi, streaming and output to a tv (HDMi), but not much cheaper than a laptop.
