Volume of writes will speed up failure, but it won't have the same impact as it does on a HHD.

^Anyone looking to put an SSD into their PC should take care, there's a number of things to do to reduce writes and set it up properly, more so if you are running WinXP rather than 7. I recently put a Samsung SSD into to a desktop on Win7, but the supplied CD came with good instructions and software to guide you through it.

^ Why? Speed. As for reliability come back to me in 2 years and I'll tell you if it is still working. I bought a 250GB one for about $170 AUD.

faster, which means you can open Word 2010 2 sec faster than you would normally,

for the majority of users, completely pointless, for heavy duty access to large Database in read mode, very useful

Not sure. SSDs write in a more linear way, so it may write quicker, but I would guess it'd take longer to retrieve all the parts when you come to actually watch the DL. Also, not all SSDs are equal as some have better OSs than others.

I use an SSD for my system drive which is probably the best upgrade one can make to their PC. For example, my boot time is about 350% quicker and programs launch in the blink of an eye. I still rely on normal HDs for data although I won't buy any of the current shit that WD sells here.

Good to see how you trust that lass Is the info recent?

I have just ordered 5 WD 2TB to replace the 5 Seagate 1TB in my NAS of which 2 are due to break down any day now according to their SMART diagnostics data.
The Seagates are, except for one, not older than a year but they were originally bought over 2 years ago - 4 of them has been replaced on warranty with "refurbished" ones which doesn't have a warranty sticker so I can't claim them again..
The original ones lasted between 6 month - 2 years and the refurbished ones seems to have half of that lifetime in them before breaking down.

No - I don't think she's talking to me any more.

I want to change what I said about 3rd tier drives here. I reckon we're getting 6th tier drives as they all seem to be shit from either WD or Seagate.

I daren't look at any diagnostic programs as they'll probably inform me that all my drives are imminently going to self destruct.

the SMART info on some of my raid system have been indicating immediate failure for more than 6 months now

not sure if it's reliable at the end, or just a way to force you to buy new ones

don't do it for that long, only three hours at average fridge temperature,

    if still no luck

open and remove everything apart from the disk and replace them from a identical drive, works everytime.
jaut a basic clean environment, remeber they are sterile inside, not complicated at all, if you can change a tire you can do that.
    Sorry about me horrible speling

it seems you have not done this before - it is no where as easy as you make it sound , which you would know if you had tried it yourself
