I recently made the mistake of taking up true's offer of a free adsl2+ modem so I could take advantage of their recent service upgrade. I thought what the hell, saves my going and buying one... Ive hit some wired problems with it, that has not been mentioned on TD so I thought I would.

What I have discovered is that true is that somewhere within their organisation true have employed a monkey, who's learned to wear a suit and talk but not much else. This monkey has been given the job of deciding what the customers want and the clever monkey has decided that configuring the routers to redirect http web traffic to a landing page.

Essentially if you have one of these true billion routers, unless you have some kind of cookie or something in your brewer where ever you want to go in the internet you are going to end up at the true launch page. for normal web browsing this seems to be the first time a browser hits the internet and then random occurrences there after.... a mild annoyance
The problem comes when you start using http file archives to building and managing linux builds etc. all your http requests get sent to the landing page and fail. this never stops because you download software never takes up the cookie. creating a strange half broken internet, thats you down a rather interesting fault finding path.
The find is simple if you have a router which lets you disable this wonderful 'service improvement' true have provided us with.
the fix (for a billion 150n 4 port wifi router):
logon onto the router,
go to the maintenance page,
then the landingpage tab,
click on disable.
save and reboot
Then your true internet, will start behaving like the internet again.
I think I am starting to go native, as for some reason I am filled with the controllable urge to take the elephant gun I don't have; then self destructively go and bag myself something with the common sence of a monkey and mount its head on a wall.
