    Computer replacement/Where's Harry?

My old notebook is grinding to a halt. It think the memory has gone bad? It is slow to process photo printing and doesn't like videos anymore. It runs XP.

As I only use it for the office I'm thinking an HP or.. all-in-one desktop. Basically a notebook behind a screen.

I assume, for now, that HP will have a notebook style small hard drive so I can simply clone my original drive using an external/USB HD plug and away I go. In theory.

Is there any reason(s) this plan will not work?
You should never allow yourself to be held back merely by not knowing anything at all about anything.

If I understand you right you will use a external hard disk to back up all your files/photos/music etc from your dying computer and transfer them onto the new machine?

If that's what you mean then you should have no problems. I just bought a western digital external HD and the first time I plugged it into my laptop via USB it asked me if it should make a back up copy of all my files automatically.

Oh also have you thought about taking your notebook to a computer shop first before replacing? Sometimes just a upgrade of the RAM or a clean up and sorting of all the files can restore it to a quick machine again.

sounds like a virus or poorly optimized WinXP,

sounds like you have no clue how to run a computer, so the problem won't go away with a new one, just repeat after a few months. I suggest you buy an iPad. This what Harry would say

my computer has XP too, and is starting to run like treacle

I am considering backing up and wiping everything clean and reinstalling Windows

lot of work but probably worth it rather than buying a new machine and having to reinstall lots anyway

I like those all in one desktops, i have one. ive seen some for as little as 14000 baht in Lotus with a 20 inch screen
Theyre not too heavy too, you can carry one up to your bedroom at night to watch your movies and they have wifi

I just used it and it seems quite basic and not very user friendly

I then used Glary Utilities (free also) and it found another 6 registry problems left

this latter program is much better written in my opinion

I think it is true that he ditched it.
But you just have to look at his photo to see that he is an office nerd who has no idea of what he is doing.

Use RegClean, good enough, remove all those garbage apps and your PC will run faster than ever,

decrease your swap for better performance if you have more than 1GB

when everything else fail, buy an iPad

With Win XP, the best solution to a machine that is running slow is:

    1) Backup - & make sure you have installation disks for the programs you use.
    2) Full Format & Reinstall Win XP.
    3) Reinstall all your programs.
    4) Copy your data from backup. (This is easier said than done though, especially for stuff like Outlook)

It's a time consuming pain in the arse, but seems to be necessary every 8-12 months.

Of course, if you're technical enough, you can make a disc image of the system immediately after installing it (and the programs) - so that next time you restore from that and get back to that 'clean' stage much quicker.

What's the best way to do this?

Today went to a mate's place to fix his PC. Ancient XP OS, he said he had antivirus, there was a setting in the firewall to allow AVG but the program was nowhere to be found on the computer. Found 130 infected files. It was quite a laugh running the boot scan and seeing all the porn files come up (luckily his missus was in the other room). But the problems with his internet working and browsers still not connecting persist. Tomorrow looking at a complete reinstall.

Doing a restore from image sounds better than a system restore, which I tried, with no success.
Some people think it don't, but it be.

^ standard practice in a corporate environment. If you've got a few hundred machines you need to take care of, you can't afford to spend too much time fucking around with individual machines. Normally just pull the faulty machine out, replace it with a spare then reimage the fucker and stick it back in the stores.

A few years ago I was called into streamline an IT department of 17 people. Once I'd finished it, there were 5 working there (one manager, 2 good server admins and two desktop support) - productivity went through the roof and the company was saving nearly 2 million Baht a year (nicely justified my exorbitant fee )

^ in a corporate environment with cheap IT labor, it makes sense to automate everything, like in any production chain, even though things could be fixed in less than 1 hour. Problem is you are dealing with cheap IT, so they have no brain and all they can do is run some idiotic procedure, hence my reference to Indian Tech Support gurus, the equivalent of IT slaves.

for individual user, it seems overkill or very amateurish when it can be done in 1 hour by doing the right things. But again the majority of users are freaking idiots with no clue, so I agree with you that the IT slave procedure might be their only option. All they need is learn a little bit, but never underestimate the intellectual laziness of the average user.

Harry was quite good for following IT procedure, even though he didn't understand where they came from. Btw, where is he ?

any self respecting corporate IT department would put dumb admins instead with strict written procedures on how to solve 99.99% of the problems (usually hardware if the rest is properly setup)

good business is about putting dumb people under strict management

You're right. We should just have used one guy working 6 days a week on 12 hour days - would have been far more efficient. Of course we'd have to make sure that he never got sick or took a holiday or anything.

I think 2 is fine, it's just they don't have to be good.

dumb admins are cheaper than the good ones, you can even take junior admin for half price if your IT operations is will documented and industrialized

I recommended and use Auslogics Boostspeed programme. It can be purchased online or downloaded from torrent sites.
