Oh also have you thought about taking your notebook to a computer shop first before replacing? Sometimes just a upgrade of the RAM or a clean up and sorting of all the files can restore it to a quick machine again.

I am considering backing up and wiping everything clean and reinstalling Windows

lot of work but probably worth it rather than buying a new machine and having to reinstall lots anyway

I like those all in one desktops, i have one. ive seen some for as little as 14000 baht in Lotus with a 20 inch screen
Theyre not too heavy too, you can carry one up to your bedroom at night to watch your movies and they have wifi

and Disc defrag

AND a full virus scan

then decide if you want / need to buy new .

simply use the auto clean option and set for 3 passes .

^ standard practice in a corporate environment. If you've got a few hundred machines you need to take care of, you can't afford to spend too much time fucking around with individual machines. Normally just pull the faulty machine out, replace it with a spare then reimage the fucker and stick it back in the stores.

A few years ago I was called into streamline an IT department of 17 people. Once I'd finished it, there were 5 working there (one manager, 2 good server admins and two desktop support) - productivity went through the roof and the company was saving nearly 2 million Baht a year (nicely justified my exorbitant fee )

^ in a corporate environment with cheap IT labor, it makes sense to automate everything, like in any production chain, even though things could be fixed in less than 1 hour. Problem is you are dealing with cheap IT, so they have no brain and all they can do is run some idiotic procedure, hence my reference to Indian Tech Support gurus, the equivalent of IT slaves.

for individual user, it seems overkill or very amateurish when it can be done in 1 hour by doing the right things. But again the majority of users are freaking idiots with no clue, so I agree with you that the IT slave procedure might be their only option. All they need is learn a little bit, but never underestimate the intellectual laziness of the average user.

Harry was quite good for following IT procedure, even though he didn't understand where they came from. Btw, where is he ?

any self respecting corporate IT department would put dumb admins instead with strict written procedures on how to solve 99.99% of the problems (usually hardware if the rest is properly setup)

You're right. We should just have used one guy working 6 days a week on 12 hour days - would have been far more efficient. Of course we'd have to make sure that he never got sick or took a holiday or anything.

I think 2 is fine, it's just they don't have to be good.

dumb admins are cheaper than the good ones, you can even take junior admin for half price if your IT operations is will documented and industrialized
