    Upgrading my Win2000 PC to 512Mb RAM + P3 800

I decided to upgrade my Win2000 PC with a P3 800Mhz and 512MB after running that PC for more than 8 years with 128MB RAM and a Celeron 900Mhz

can't barely feel the difference for surfing and emails, and if it wasn't for some silly Java apps that requires a min 1Gb RAM to run, I would have been ok with the old config

Isn't Windows 2000 wonderful ? 10 years later and still working...

So it still takes two minutes to load a web page.

    Remarkable.

So with only 512mb of ram you still cannot load some Java apps that requires 1gb of ram.....

    Sounds like a worthy upgrade.

I must ask, did you trawl car boot sales for the gear ?

hardly, you do realize that loading a webpage relies more on your Internet Speed than your CPU speed, above all in the 600Mhz+ age

if we were talking legacy 233Mhz MMX you would have a point though

I do, no problem, why you ask ? or are you confused ?

I do, the silly requirements is 1GB but it was probably put there by some clueless young lazy itard who thought he was playing Warcraft

it turns out the app only needs 370MB to run smoothly, with 99% of CPU operations being for pretty UI tasks (Swing/AWT interface)

    Yes it did, in 1995.

Funnily enough I got called today asking for some help with a "critical" system that is broken and runs on .... Windows NT.

Yes, passed on that one. Someone's going to get a bollocking tomorrow, and it's not going to be me.

^thats interesting. In unix its not that uncommon to find critical systems that are running on systems that are in excess of 10-20 years old. If a service is truly critical, such as say gas pressure control systems for gas distribution in the up, upgrades come with a vey high cost for little benefit.... so they keep them running for ever.

You'd love the icon computer mall here Butters. It's full of old assorted parts that people can rumage through - you could build a replica of your current machine for < 300bt.

Fortunately it's not an ICS system, but it's still very high visibility, and hopefully now we'll get asked to replace it for them.
