I never did get around to rooting it. Getting it all set up on the windows side of my mac was too time consuming and I hate having to do stuff on windows. It was simpler to just run the samsung update through kies, which actually was a significant improvement.
Anyway, I read somewhere the memory leakage thing is a hardware issue and not a software issue. Turning the device off periodically seems to resolve the issue.
Maybe some day I'll take the time to root. I just dont see the big advantage if I'm running a stock rom, and right now I don't see any advantage to changing the rom. What little I peruse the android forums I see a number of people going back to the stock rom.
