    Kindle Touch - Initial Review

I finally got my Kindle Touch. It comes with no instructions - just the cord to plug it into your computer and the machine. I plugged it in, charged it, and loaded my WiFi. I then ordered a cheap book ($3.99). One touch and it downloaded the book to my machine in one minute, and debited my credit card which I use with my existing Amazon account. So, no more one month wait for books, and no shipping charges, which often equaled the cost of the book. I read about 200 pages last night; easy page turning and easy on the eyes. I still have to play with it to work out all the bells and whistles, but my initial reaction is that it is quite nifty. I don't think for me it will ever replace 'real' books, but it is a really nice alternative source. Opened my e-mail this AM and had the standard message from Amazon with purchase order information. So, now to work out how to download free books is the next step.

You might need to download some software called Calibre (you can get it from http://calibre-ebook.com/download); if you get ebooks in the wrong format, it can convert them for you.

Just the way a book feels in your hands and the whole ritual you go through with a book with a new book is missed.

Took me ages to get over reading news online instead of a 'real newspaper' and stop missing the smell of newspaper.

Thanks for the review, Davis. Going by this, I'll definitely ask for one as my b-day gift.

It works off of ambient light, thus, if reading at night, you have to have a good light source. I may buy the lighted cover for it, since I tend to go to sleep several hours after my wife and don't want to disturb her into the wee hours with the bedside lamp. But, I think the lighted cover is about half the price of the Kindle, so I'm going to think on it a bit.

Cheers, Harry. I am going to try that first, and see how evenly it spreads the light across the page. Review to follow.

do it, well worth it, and hell $40 is about 1000 baht, not even a night's drinks bill.

saves carrying around an extra light + batteries etc.

Absolutely agree that it is well worth it - but it's closer to $50 plus shipping etc so at the end you are probably looking at THB 2,000.

You really do need it because even in sort of 'semi-darkness' it is difficult to read the Kindle without the light.

I got my Kindle a year ago and incl. the cover it came to $200 - not chaep but one of the best investments I ever made. I have not touched a paper book ever since simply due to the unlimited amount of available ebooks. A friend gave me one CD with more than 8,000 books on it and at an average price of THB 400 for a paper back I already recovered the cost of my Kindle many times over.

If we could have a kindle that could wipe your arse there would be even less need for paper...most people wouldn't need a light, too...

Why bother when a little clip on Daiso special will do the job for a 1/10th of the price. And it's hardly "carrying around an extra light", they're the size of a ball point pen.
The next post may be brought to you by my little bitch Spamdreth

I use the mobilism forum links - you do have to wade through a bit of sh1te vampire / zombie novels beloved by the yoof , but lots of good gear

project gutenberg - and then use calibre to convert to the device you will be utilising
