    Help please

I'm looking for some advice please. I have been trying for 4 months to get a land line from TOT installed to my house so I can use ADSL internet. The latest excuse from TOT is that they will instal the line, a distance of about 2 kms, but cannot guarantee that I will get any decent speed because of the long distance. Sounds a bit strange to me. TOT believe that I will be wasting my money, some 20000 baht, to run the line. I invite comments on this please. Thankls.

Is 2km the distance from your house to the DSLAM or just the extra line that has to be installed.
3.5km is no problem if it is the distance to the DSLAM.

If you go ahead tell them to use 0.5 twisted pair wire.
They should know this but best to ask

ADSL should be effective for up to 5km from the exchange.

If you are using Gdmt then 5 km is OK, but ADSL2+ will only go 3.5 km

Thanks for that. The 2 km is from the DSLAM (had to google that one). It's a lot of money to spend to find out it is useless, but then again even if the speed drops it still has to be quicker than the AIS Aircard I'm using which is bloody hopeless.

don't let them skimp on the cross sectional area of the wire - 0.5 mm2 sounds good

I had my line replaced with twisted pair recently.
    The line speed increased dramatically.

I'm now on ADSL2+ and 1.5 km from the DSLAM
I can get an attainable rate of 18000 Kbps
That's the sort of figure you should be aiming for.

Thanks for the info. The wife rang TOT last Friday telling them we want the 0.5 wire. They were supposed to ring back but of course they haven't so far. Thanks again.

Just an update. TOT have refused to state what size wire they would use, which is by the by because they have now refused to instal the line due to poor signal strength. Fucking hopeless. I have tried all the ISPs I can find but no-one else services the village. That's the end of it. Fuck 'em all.

That's bollocks, they just don't want to help you. 2km is not far.
Go see the head honcho and ask him politely what he can do to help.

You need to pull a few strings.
