This is from wiki, but I'll trust this number.
Active 1.4 millionAs of June 30, 2008, about 1,427,546 people are on active duty in the military with an additional 1,458,400 people in the seven reserve components.[4]
Reserve 1.4 million
Total population of US is 303 million (including children/infants).
So, 2.8 million out of 303 million is what %?
I'm not good at math.
Currently I am pretty sure there are just over 1 million people in federal prison, state and local jails. No source here, so someone can google if they want.
............
1 in 100 Americans serving jail or prison time, new report findsUsing state-by-state data, the report says 2,319,258 Americans were in jail or prison at the start of 2008 - one out of every 99.1 adults.

McCain is a retired Navy captain. That earns him a few points among the military folks. Regardless of year or candidates or platforms or issues, the military leans generally toward conservative republican for one main reason.
Historically, GOP presidents give higher pay raises than Democrats.

Not sure but I believe for several years military pay raises have been based on average % increases in civilian wages? A bill passed by Congress recently will adjust military pay based on a percentage of the defense budget from 2008 onward. Congress granted a 3.5% across the board pay raise for 2008.Originally Posted by Texpat

^Didn't Bush also make several cuts in pay rates? I vaugely recall hearing something along those lines.
I don't think so. I would doubt it. Pay raises were pretty much a rubber stamp for the last several years. You could be thinking about veterans care. Even with that I don't think there was any significant cut backs but would have to do a little "fact" finding. Except for the objection to the 2008 pay raise, (mentioned above) which may have some merit, Bush has been pretty good to the military.Originally Posted by AntRobertson
^Yes you're right sorry, I remember now is was not pay rates but benefits of some description.

And a conviction for many crimes carry with it the loss of voting privileges.
Yes, it felony convictions that carries along with it the loss of voter rights - amoung a few other civil liberties as well.
But there has been a push to change this. And in some states felons can get the right to vote back.
There are tons of possible links in regard to this - here is one:

^ Travesty of justice, IMO.
^Why is that?
Sentence served, no?

^ WTF? You want a person convicted of rape, child molesting/rape/murder to have a vote? Ya, that's the lefty way. They can be rehabilitated. Maybe a few, but not many.
Forget it. Shoot 'em and let them come back as cockroaches in a Thai takeaway stall. Squish.
Next they'll be campaigning to let Isaani villagers keep the vote.

OK Jet, as a matter in interest, can you answer which crimes you would consider that the offender is unable to be rehabilitated, or not sufficiently punished by whatever was meted out by the Courts, to not warrent being able to take part in the democratic process:
1. Murder;
2. Rape;
3. Arsen;
4. Assault;
5. Illegal possession of a firearm;
6. Fly Tipping;
7. Graffiti;
8. Vandalism;
9. Drink Driving;
10. Possession of cannabis.
Thank you. As an addition, if you would like to suggest which of the above crimes are worthy of the shooting option you suggested, could you indicate that next the corresponding number also.

Uh oh. How could he slip up like that when the Dems say he is soooo much more intelligent than McC? I think Obama's interview with O'Reilly shook him up -- did you notice how many times Obama slapped O'Reilly's knee during that show? "C'mon, you know..blah blah" That's a physical move you use when you know your reasoning is imperfect and you need to add a bit of body contact for the palsy walsy effect, kinda like used car salesmen when they try to sell you a lemon.
^ Sorry, BA, should have clarified.
Any felony. If you choose to commit a serious offence, then I believe your voting rights should be rescinded. Misdemeanours -- well, a US president can be impeached for misdemeanours. Although in Clinton's case, I wouldn't say obstruction of justice, perjury and abuse of office were misdemeanours. The Dem senators got him off anyway.
^So would it be OK to peruse the list of crimes and adjudicate thus. I am interested to know what type of crime renders one disenfranchised...
