It isn't the sinsot that I find offensive, it's the continued monetary demands that come after the wedding, these demands seem to come from any family member and for any reason, and when we don't fall over ourselves to hand over the cash it's they take offense.
I'm quite sure that this isn't always the case but it dose seem to happen more often that not.

I suppose if the family are poor and get into debt, or need something, the first thing they will try is the rich husband that has joined the family

if it is not for a medical bill, or schooling or something urgent, then all you have to do is refuse

if they take umbrage, so what! up to them; they will get over it and come back another time
    I have reported your post

Trouble is Doc when you refuse their demands they then start working the head on their daughter, as the daughters are brought up to do as the parents tell them this then puts a lot of stress on a marriage.

    I'm lucky.

I have zero to do with piss poor uneducated peasants in my home country. Mainly because I find their standard of living repulsive, plus they're uneducated, and, well... peasants.

Naturally I carry this over to any country I live in, especially here.

I pity those who move here and lumber themselves with, what would be called backhome, tinkers/pikeys/knackers/trailer-park trash or whatever the term for the lowest of the low, the filthiest and most uneducated social class wherever yer from.

why would anybody do it to themselves?

^^^ What does that have to do with sinsot though Mao- are you suggesting that is a 'peasant' thing? The pop star Tata Youngs parents (American father, Thai mother) received a Sinsot of 100 million baht. Peasants?

Your self respect comes from wiping people down who havent had the breaks you've had, that still makes you a snob

No, my self respect comes from what I've achieved, and will achieve in my life.

Sitting on a dirty floor eating shite with the uneducated doesn't appeal to me. Regardless of country/race/location. I don't mix with pikies back home, as most people here wouldn't. Why would I suddenly wish to mix with that social class here. I prefer leather sofas, cleanliness, and those with an awareness of hygiene and sanitation.

what's wrong, or remotely snobish with that?

But most farang men who marry uneducated Isaan peasants are normally from similar educational and social backgrounds. I Why would they marry an Isaan ex-whore otherwise?
Therefore they are often quite good matches.

    Fair enough.
Well, even those who have married a "good" Isaan girl - I mean, what do they have in common with an uneducated peasant? What do they talk about? What shared values?
I can only imagine that they of similar education and background themselves.

What do you talk about with your missus?

The conversations I have my my uneducated Isaan peasant are pretty much the same as ones I had with my educated English wife. To think that they would be any different only shows you as being ignorant (something my uneducated Isaan peasant hasn't shown yet).

No Marmite. What it shows is that you are an dullard and lack the wit to have a proper conversation with an educated westerner.
That is why you are living in Isaan with a peasant.

we have an agreement that our family comes first, then her family

she has never done anything her mother or the rest tell her anyway

so no stress, we agree not to pay for anything without full consultation

we recently paid out for hospital bills for one niece, and some school costs for another. No sick buffaloes or tractors, we never give any money direct to the family

I'm afraid I find conversation with 'educated' westerners quite dull usually. Your local sports league, what beer yer like, popular culture, office gossip, blah blah- I doubt the actual content varies much between office workers in Bangkok, just adjusted for local leagues, events, celebs and so on. Really, most casual chatter is pretty inane. It's just lightweight socialising, and sharing a bit of craic- and a shared sense of humour is easier between people of your own culture. I'm sure it's no different in China, or Isaan, or Brazil etc.

The term being bandied about is 'peasant'- well the peasant is just the basic work unit in a mainly agrarian society, just as the 'worker' is the basic work unit in our mainly industrialised/commercialised society- ie the peasant of the west is the worker, or the working man if you prefer. It is a bit amusing that the term is used derogatively, because in several ways I find their 'peasant' lifestyle, recollections and sincerity more interesting than the more standardised worker bees of the west.

Actually all the white people I have met in Thailand have been 'working class' uneducated peasants, (apart from a crazy retired barrister from Hong Kong) and most of them were alright. Some idiot yobs. Some serious 'chips on shoulder ' types too. But most down to earth, compassionate and sensitive.

Presumably the same must be true about Isaan people.

But the Southern Thais I mix with say never to trust someone from Isaan.

One of my staff was from Isaan somewhere, and she does have a pair of lungs in her!

I could be standing next to her and she will shriek something to one of the other staff nearby. It really hurts.

She has left this week to go and work in Singapore as a prostitute because she doesn't earn enough money here.

Apparently she will be sleeping on a floor somewhere. She told my wife she has to sleep with the first 150 customers for free then she can keep the rest for herself.

I can't believe anyone would do that, but apparently she ran up a huge debt selling numbers, a pyramid scheme based on the last two numbers of the Thai Stock Exchange, played weekly.

She didn't believe in the goddess of mathematics apparently. Hedging was writing the favoured numbers on the sole of her foot.

When she left she took my wife's shoes, leaving a note in their places. Thoughtful.

    M

They are not all uneducated peasants, many of these people grow up to become doctors, nurses, engineers you name it. Do you really think that urbanite Thai professionals migrate to the rural Isaan just for the chance to work in the hospitals there?

A rare exception in my experience, you are a lucky man.

so no stress, we agree not to pay for anything without full consultation

I paid for her fathers eye operation, didn't get so much as a nod out of the ignorant pig for it.
I paid for the Mothers private medical care, got scowled at for it.
On our wedding day her youngest brother asked me for 1 million baht so that he could start breeding cows, after I said no he went around telling all the guests at the reception what a tightarsed bastard I was and did all he could to wreck the wedding. The eldest brother came and told me that he didn't want money from me but I would have to pay for his two kids to go to a private international school.
To top it all they robbed me on the wedding night too.

That's the sort of people many Isaan folk actually are, be they educated professionals or peasants
