Of course it is, most 'know it all' farangs that in reality know nothing expose themselves when they come out with this nonsense.

Regrettably, all too often the 'big new place' in the local area is paid for by a farang, all too often the girl is an ex-BG. It's the case around here too. Nothing against either the girls or their affluent Beau's- but when you look at the stark contrast between the 'in your face' affluence of the Bar girl (and once they get indoctrinated into the life, they're not shy to flash it) and the long, uphill grind of the equally or more attractive girl that studies at University, or just works in a factory, frankly I'm surprised more don't take the easy option.

^ I would bet half of the girls who marry foreigners nowadays have educations and met their husbands through the internet. I know three who met through yahoo chat. One of those has a Phd. Take a look around Thailand and you will see much more farang-Thai activity that isn't related to the nightlife than before. Even some girls in the best universities in Thailand want to marry foreigners. There's a lot of communicating going electronically.

Hey 'Yahpie', that must mean that you feel at home wether living in Thailand or S Africa. Considering your opinion of Thais, do you think SA any better ? After all SA is a civilised country.

I know. I am not keen on the idea of dowrys as much as the next man, but we came to a compromise. Her parents owed the bank 100,000 Baht. So the missus chipped in 50K and so did I. We were offered it back after the wedding.

Your wife paid for herself? That's even weirder than the whole dowry concept already is.

    question is:
did you call their bluff and accept their offer, or did you fall for the scam and just let them keep the money as they knew you would?
..and if you did the "honourable thing" and declined the offer of the refund:
have you never wondered if a thai male would have done the same, or whether he would even have been made the offer in the first place?

I've been to three Thai-Thai marriages and never once was the dowry offered back to the groom. They probably knew he'd snatch their hand off

the offer to return the sinsot would only occur if that was what was agreed in advance

sometimes all or a proportion is returned, then it seems as if the groom is paying a large amount

of course you would not see it happen, unless you were the groom or immediate family
    I have reported your post

you just posted this nonsense on another post

re are newbies reading this shit, some of them who could add value to the forum and take the place of some of the greats who were lost, who finally just had enough of the whining and childish comments and baiting and boring crap churned out by the same few tossers,
newbies who could simply just :
give it a miss, or not even bother to try and add any value because they could simply not be bothered to have to field the kind of shit that these "honoured, longtime members" regularly throw at anybody who deviates from their point of view.

any newbie reading that shit would think TG was a forum for right wing racists/sexists/mysogynists, if they took any of your posts as typical

I've never heard of that before, I'd always thought of it as a "pays ya money takes ya chance" affair.
When I saw the money counted out by the brides father the look said it all, biggest payday of his life and there weren't gonna be no discount

At the end of the day, 'sinsot' is the tradition in Thailand, just as dowry is in India. It is not invented for the farang, so whilst we may not like it because it does not exist in our culture, well so what- it Is. If you can't deal with the concept, don't marry a Thai.

Problems can arise because some locals get too greedy and try and rip off the farang- but problems can also arise when a farang, unused or insensitive to local ways, aggressively negotiates it as if it was a fake Gucci or something. This is considered demeaning to both parties- it is best really to bargain via an intermediary, more often than not the wife to be or a trusted 'auntie'. But the huge "Big Face" type sinsots do not come from farangs in Thailand- they come from Thai weddings betweeen affluent families.

Personally, apart from paying out about 15k baht for a village party, I paid no sinsot- I was never asked to actually. I asked why (later), and was told that as I was buying a house in Thailand for Mrs, plus had been paying 6k bht rent for the Mil when she lived in Bkk I had 'done enough'. also, we were considered already married- in fact we were already married, in Australia.

I suppose rapacious demands for Sinsot- especially if it is obvious that ones betrothed is 'in on' the outrageous demand- give you a pretty good clue as to the nature of the family you are marrying into. Rarely the formula for a happy marriage, so think again. I've heard the horror stories of never ending requests for money, but in reality I've not encountered it first hand in my time here- most families seem to be basically reasonable. Paying a sensible amount of sinsot should not be seen as a ripoff, or an insult.
