Only 20-25% of white Southerners give the factually correct answer to the true-false question: "Barack Obama was born in the United States."

This is a good example of what the social-science methodologists call "interaction effects."

Non-white and Latino Southerners are no less likely to get the right answer than are non-whites and Latinos in the rest of the country. So it can't be something in the water, or the effects of the fried-meat-white-bread-and-boiled-veggies culinary culture of the South.

And whites in the rest of the country also do fairly well on the question. So it can't be evidence of a cognitive deficit correlated with melanin and carotene deficiency.

But somehow the interaction of whiteness and Southerness produces deep and abiding ignorance. Perhaps it's Vitamin D poisoning due to the effects of intensive exposure to sunlight among people with little capacity to tan. Or just the effect of seeing a member of the despised under-caste elevated to the Presidency, and grossly outperforming his white Southern predecessor.

That is almost certainly not true- wouldn't 50% be a bad enough exxageration?- and it is a non-sequitor. And even so, it isn't innocence that is the issue, most people agreeing with the verdict would likely say he wasn't proven guilty. Of course, there are likely others who think a black man should be able to kill a white person once in a while, 'specially if it's some white bitch stealing their men (I heard essentially that from a black woman married to a white man (a friend of mine); talk about things that leave you speachless). The Jewish kid was just collateral damage, and, well, Jewish. Anyway, keeping OJ out of jail, at least for a while, was a good way of making sure the survivors were compensated. Of course, it has been tough for him to work given he is not resting until he finds the actual killers.

I'd rather have Europeans coming in and buying up America cheap than the Chinese or Nippon (who are also hoping against hope that the US pulls through). We are in this together- even in the wars, now that German soldiers and airmen are actually fighting for the first time since the unmentionable- unlike the Danes, who weren't afraid to mix it up in the former Yugoslavia. Of course, Captain America had to come in and sort that out, eh? The US has brains and brawn, along with a whole lot of reckless and stupid, I'll grant you.

By the way, the Chairman of Deutsche Bank said recently that the next wave is coming, so grab onto something that floats.
