LIBYAN dictator Muammar Gaddafi has been captured in his home town, according to reports today.

Sirte, one of the last hold-outs of fighters loyal to Gaddafi, has fallen to the forces of the National Transitional Council.

News agency Reuters quoted an NTC official as saying that Gaddafi had been captured, wounded in both legs.

Neither the Foreign Office nor Ministry of Defence in London were able to confirm the report or make any official comment.

It is understood that they are seeking information from sources on the ground in the north African country.

It was reported that Gaddafi was captured as he tried to flee in a convoy which was attacked by Nato.

Television broadcasts showed footage of NTC troops celebrating the fall of Sirte and the apparent capture of Gaddafi, who ruled Libya for 42 years and is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

There were fierce gun battles on the streets of the coastal city this morning, bringing an end to a siege which has lasted almost two months since the fall of capital Tripoli to rebel troops in August.

"Our forces control the last neighbourhood in Sirte," NTC member Hassan Draoua told AP. "The city has been liberated."

BBC news at 6pm carried the story that he'd been captured. Didn't get the full story as the kids were up to their usual behaviour.

    Sky Sources: Wounded Gaddafi Captured

Ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has been captured, Sky sources say.

Anti-Gaddafi fighters celebrated as news of the fate of the ousted leader emerged

"We have confirmation, dead or alive, that he is in the hands of the National Transitional Council," security editor Sam Kiley said.
"The sources who have confirmed it to Sky are as authoritative as it can get outside the NTC."
There have been conflicting reports about Gaddafi's condition and how the alleged capture happened.
A senior government official was quoted by Reuters as saying the former leader had died of wounds suffered during his capture.
Middle Eastern news channel Al-Arabiya said his body was being taken to the city of Misratah.
Earlier National Transitional Council military commander Abdel Majid told Reuters: "He's captured. He's wounded in both legs ... He's been taken away by ambulance."
Abdel Majid suggested he was taken from a convoy near Sirte as he attempted to flee.
However, Reuters also quoted a Libyan government fighter as saying he was found in a hole inside his home town.
Anti-Gaddafi fighters celebrated on the streets of Sirte as reports of Gaddafi's fate emerged.
US state department spokeswoman Beth Gosselin said Washington was aware of the reports but could not confirm them.
A Pro-Gaddafi television channel was quick to deny his death or his capture.

Of course he might be like Saddam and have a load of lookalikes around.

Libya: No confirm Gadhafi captured in Sirte fall

SIRTE, Libya (AP) — Libyan officials and NATO say they cannot confirm reports from revolutionary fighters that ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was captured or killed in the fall of his hometown Thursday.
The Misrata Military Council, one of multiple command groups for revolutionary forces, says its fighters captured Gadhafi in Sirte. Another commander, Abdel-Basit Haroun, says Gadhafi was killed when an airstrike hit a convoy trying to flee.
The spokesman for Libya's transitional government, Jalal al-Gallal, and its military spokesman Abdul-Rahman Busin say the reports have not been confirmed. A NATO official also said the alliance could not independently confirm.
Repeated past reports of Gadhafi family deaths or captures have later proved incorrect.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
SIRTE, Libya (AP) — Libyan fighters drove the last holdouts of Moammar Gadhafi out of his hometown of Sirte in a few hours of fierce gunbattles Thursday, then declared victory over the last major resistance two months after the fall of Tripoli. The ecstatic former rebels celebrated by firing endless rounds into the sky, pumping their guns, knives and even a meat cleaver in the air and singing the national anthem.
In the central quarter where the final battle took place, the fighters looking like the same ragtag force that started the uprising eight months ago jumped up and down with joy and flashed V-for-victory signs. Some burned the green Gadhafi flag, then stepped on it with their boots.
They chanted "Allah akbar," or "God is great" in Arabic, while one fighter climbed a traffic light pole to unfurl the revolution's flag, which he first kissed. Discarded military uniforms of Gadhafi's fighters littered the streets. One revolutionary fighter waved a silver trophy in the air while another held up a box of firecrackers, then set them off.
"Our forces control the last neighborhood in Sirte," Hassan Draoua, a member of Libya's interim National Transitional Council, told The Associated Press in Tripoli. "The city has been liberated."
Despite the fall of Tripoli on Aug, 21, Gadhafi loyalists mounted fierce resistance in several areas, including Sirte, preventing Libya's new leaders from declaring full victory in the eight-month civil war. Earlier this week, revolutionary fighters gained control of one stronghold, Bani Walid, and by Tuesday said they had squeezed Gadhafi's forces in Sirte into a residential area of about 700 square yards but were still coming under heavy fire from surrounding buildings.
Reporters at the scene watched as the final assault began around 8 a.m. and ended about 90 minutes later. Just before the battle, about five carloads of Gadhafi loyalists tried to flee the enclave down the coastal highway that leads out of the city. But they were met by gunfire from the revolutionaries, who killed at least 20 of them.
After the battle, revolutionaries began searching homes and buildings looking for any hiding Gadhafi fighters. At least 16 were captured, along with cases of ammunition and trucks loaded with weapons. Reporters saw revolutionaries beating captured Gadhafi men in the back of trucks and officers intervening to stop them.
Deputy Defense Minister Fawzi Abu Katif on Wednesday told the AP that authorities still believe Gadhafi's son Muatassim is among the ex-regime figures holed up in the diminishing area in Sirte. He was not seen on the ground after the final battle on Thursday.
In an illustration of how difficult and slow the fighting for Sirte was, it took the anti-Gadhafi fighters, who also faced disorganization in their own ranks, two days to capture a single residential building.
Gadhafi loyalists who have escaped could still continue the fight and attempt to organize an insurgency using the vast amount of weapons Gadhafi was believed to have stored in hideouts in the remote southern desert.
Unlike Iraq's Saddam Hussein, Gadhafi had no well-organized political party that could form the basis of an insurgent leadership. However, regional and ethnic differences have already appeared among the ranks of the revolutionaries, possibly laying the foundation for civil strife.
Gadhafi, who is in hiding, has issued several audio recordings trying to rally supporters. Libyan officials have said they believe he's hiding somewhere in the vast southwestern desert near the borders with Niger and Algeria.

    Cnn

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- Conflicting reports surfaced Thursday that deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi is dead or has been captured. Deafening celebrations erupted in Tripoli, but none of the reports could be independently verified.
Gadhafi was killed, AbdelHakim Bilhajj, head of the National Transitional Council's military arm in Tripoli announced live on Al-Jazeera Arabic Thursday. Gadhafi's death was also reported by National Transitional Council television station Al-Ahrar. It did not cite a source.
A cell phone photograph distributed by the news agency Agence France Presse appeared to show the arrest of a bloodied Gadhafi. CNN could not independently verify the authenticity of the image.
Gadhafi's capture was also reported by Libyan television, citing the Misrata Military Council.
Earlier, a National Transitional Council military spokesman told CNN that reports of Gadhafi's capture are only rumors. Abdurahman Bousin added that it's doubtful that Gadhafi was even in or around his hometown of Sirte.
A "big fish" has been captured in Libya, but Libyan Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam couldn't say with certainty whether it was Gadhafi.
The U.S. State Department could not confirm any of the reports about Gadhafi's capture or killing, a spokeswoman said.
In another major development, revolutionary fighters said they wrested control of Sirte Thursday. And NATO said it is going to convene soon for a meeting to discuss ending its operation in Libya, a source told CNN.
Earlier, NATO aircraft struck two pro-Gadhafi military vehicles in the Sirte vicinity.
Without foolproof evidence of Gadhafi's capture, it was unclear whether Thursday would turn out to be the biggest day in recent Libyan history. Statements made by representatives of Libya's new leadership in the past have not always turned out to be true.
Still, Libyans erupted in joy. Horns blared and celebratory gunfire burst into the air in Tripoli.
Gadhafi ruled Libya with an iron fist for 42 years. The mercurial leader came to power in a bloodless coup against King Idris in 1969, when he was just an army captain.
By the end of his rule, he claimed to be "King of Kings," a title he had a gathering of tribal leaders grant him in 2008.

An image captured off a cellular phone camera shows the arrest of Libya's Muammar Gaddafi in Sirte. A Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) commander had told AFP that Gaddafi was captured as his hometown Sirte was falling, adding that the ousted strongman was badly wounded. He later dies of his wounds.
