Here's how to deal with a riot: Chilean police use water cannon and tear gas on rampaging mob


Anti-riot police in Chile have shown their British counterparts how to control unrest after turning water cannons and tear gas on a rampaging mob.
Masked demonstrators burning cars and looting shops in the capital Santiago were met with force as Chilean police cracked down on further unrest over state education.
By last night, at least 273 protesters had been arrested across the country, and 23 police officers were injured in the clashes.

It is the latest in more than two months of unrest in the country over the way public education is funded.
Youths torched cars and barricades and hurled rocks, paint and even furniture at police in the capital.


Apartment buildings were also attacked, with street signs used to smash windows.
High school and university students have refused to attend classes, taken over schools and staged demonstrations to press their demand for fundamental changes in how Chile finances public education.

Concerns have been raised that private universities, which enjoy non-profit tax status, are not reinvesting in educational improvements as required by law.
Underfunded municipalities are also left in charge of high school education nationwide.
This has left most schools starved of resources, while leaving some wealthy neighbourhood schools well off.
Chile's small upper class sends its children to private schools or even overseas for their education.
Last week, a banned marched ended in nearly 900 arrests in the capital. There have also been peaceful marches across the country, calling on the government to provide 'free and equal' public education.

University of Chile student president Camila Vallejos said 150,000 marched on sidestreets in the capital because they had been blocked from marching ont he main avenue.
There are thought to be as many as 80,000 involved in the marches.
But Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter said the violence showed student leaders could not control their demonstrators.
Teachers union president Jaime Gajardo reiterated the students' call for a national referendum on their demands - an idea dismissed by the governing centre-right as 'dangerous'.
Student leaders used social networking sites to spread the word for supporters to engage in 'cacerolazos' - where pots and pans are banged in protest.
Pot-banging in the middle of the night was a frequent method of protest during General Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship between 1973 and 1990.

At least the Chileans seem to have some legitimate beef regarding important education issues.. As opposed to a bunch of feral chavs looting designer gear in some urban lord-of-the flies scenario. While our supposed "police force" just look on, having been castrated by fucking socialist politicians.

The british police force is just too soft. Go ahead and hide behind your CCTV cameras and whatnot in hopes of having those find the suspects rather than taking the time to do actual police work.

Their right to protest is not in question. Their reasons may even be sound.
Their right to 'Riot' however, is non-existent. Unless they are happy to declare civil war, and deal with the consequences.
Has anyone ever thought of charging these water cannons with some sort of virulent itching powder?
Or a dye, to clearly mark out those who have been damaging property, and looting?

COPS were last night facing an official probe after a film of them "aggressively" tackling suspected looters became an internet hit.

Three youths on bicycles in Manchester were confronted by seven riot squad cops with batons.
Two managed to pedal away but one was cornered and appeared to be struck up to four times with a baton, before apparently being kicked.

I'm just waiting for the CNN interview with Somchai Watchesporn saying how they are going to loot and burn down Dixons.

I sincerely hope the rioters in the UK are not representative of the safe democratic majority. I certainly know they haven't had their democratic vote repeatedly disenfranchised, or been been shot with live ammo for peacefully protesting. It is after that that they rose up.

I was vice chair of the conservative National party in Sydney for a while during the late 80's, and given the way rightist politics have proceeded since then, especially in the USA & Thailand, the term redneck might just stick. When I was in the Army in N Ireland we used to put U2 batteries in instead of the rubber projectile. Probably the real reason for the head injuries.
