    Thais are getting smarter !

    Students bag 99 maths medals







    A squad of young Thai students returned home with 99 medals yesterday which they earned from an international mathematics competition in Indonesia.
    Chinapat Phumrat, secretary-general of the Office of Basic Education Commission, said the students excelled on both an individual and team basis.
    Obec sent 33 students to the one-week contest on Bali. The competition drew participants from 28 countries.
    Sixteen are primary school students, and the rest junior secondary students.
    They took part in the International Mathematics Competition 2011.
    In the individual event for primary-aged students and younger, the students grabbed three golds, four silvers and nine bronzes.
    The golds went to Pat Kittipongpat of Suthithon Kindergarten in Nakhon Pathom, Thanayuth Asavawinyadet of Assumption School in Bangkok, and Thanakorn Lertnitat of Chaiyaphum Kindergarten in Chaiyaphum.
    The students also won two second-place trophies and one third-place trophy in the team category.
    In the individual event for the older students, Thailand won two golds from Torpong Nitayanont of Chulalongkorn University Demonstration School and Narawit Apiromrak of Hat Yai Witthayalai School in Songkhla.
    The Thai team also brought home seven silvers and six bronzes in the individual category.
    In the team category, Thailand won three second-place trophies and one third-place trophy.

    German girl grabs gold in Math Olympiad 2011


    AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, July 22 (Xinhua) -- The 18-year-old German contestant Lisa Sauermann won the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2011 with a perfect score of 42 points, announced the IMO 2011 organization board on Friday.
    This is her 4th golden medal in IMO in total, which made her the best participant in the history of the IMO.
    Jeck Lim from Singapore came second with 40 points. Lin Chen from China came third with 38 points.
    The most successful teams were from China, the United States and Singapore.
    The IMO is the largest science Olympiad in the world. The student competitor writes two contest papers on consecutive days, with three problems on each day. Every question is worth 7 points, in total 42 points.
    This year, the contest took place in the Netherlands for the first time. 564 students from 101 countries and regions took part.
