Way to early to know who was behind the attack, I don't agree with your used of the word "fanatical," because you wouldn't use that same word to describe the Norwegians killing people in Libya and Afghanistan. People have been mislead to think Norwegians are a bunch of peace loving beatniks, they might not kill each other on a large scale, but they have no problem with their military killing people in far off lands, or causing conflicts with the publishing of provacative pictures and articles in newspapers, they also are a big funder of NATO, and the bombing of Libya. That is not to say the attacks are justified, but to give people some idea why a person might want to attack the country.

There are no hallmarks of any islamic angle to this. The targets were specific and political in nature. An attack of this nature has a message attached - read it. "Shame on you" (etc...) for assuming that every bomb attack in the west is a muslim one...

Evil indeed. What politcal gain can be achieved by blowing up a building and killing anyone who happens to be passing by. What polical gain can be achieved by shooting a bunch of kids camping on an island.

What kind of belief system; relegion or ideology can support such behavior? Only really fucking evil people do this kind of thing....and it matters not one iota if they are AQ, IRA or self proclaimd anachists.....such things have been done by all of them. There is no monolopy held by any group when it comes to evil deeds.

Apparently the "hero" who gathered the children in front of him before shooting was 6ft 2inches blond hair and spoke with a perfect Norwegian accent. Suggesting s that he had connections with a far right extremist group. From BBC news report.

Yep, I'm sure this is all Bush's fault but, according to The Guardian, NRK is reporting that an unknown group called “Helpers of the Global Jihad” have posted a message that this is only the beginning of the reaction to Norwegian periodicals publishing the Muhammed cartoons, according to Andrew Boyle, a journalist in Norway.

The NY Times has more on the terror group:

A terror group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami (the Helpers of the Global Jihad), issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at CNA, a research institute that studies terrorism. The message said the attack was a response to Norwegian forces’ presence in Afghanistan and to unspecified insults to the Prophet Muhammad. “We have warned since the Stockholm raid of more operations,” the group said, apparently referred to a bombing in Sweden in December 2010, according to Mr McCants’ translation. “What you see is only the beginning, and there is more to come.” The claim could not be confirmed.

Never mind Lom, found what you were referring to: Norwegian TV2 reports that Breivik belongs to "ring-wing circles" in Oslo. Swedish news site Expressen adds that he has been known to write to right-wing forums in Norway, is a self-described nationalist and has also written a number of posts critical of Islam.

Sounds like another deranged Timothy McVeigh...

Man Held After 87 Killed In Norway Attacks

A 32-year-old Norwegian suspect has been arrested after at least 87 people were killed in two attacks in Norway.


At least seven people died in Oslo after a huge car bomb exploded close to buildings which house the offices of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

A further 80 were killed when a man dressed as a police officer opened fire on the island of Utoya where a youth meeting of the ruling Labour Party was taking place.
Previously, police had said that at least 10 had been killed on the holiday island but the death toll rose dramatically early this morning.

Police chief Oystein Maeland told a news conference: "We can't guarantee that won't increase", adding the attack had reached "catastrophic dimensions".



The suspect has been named as Anders Behring Breivik



The suspect being held in connection with both attacks has been named in Norwegian television reports as Anders Behring Breivik.

Police are understood to have searched a flat in west Oslo where the man lived.
An anonymous police official said the suspect was arrested in Utoya and appears to have acted alone in the attacks.
