Baby 'stabbed with scissors'


A YOUNG mother killed her newborn baby with a pair of nail scissors and tried to cover up the death as a stillbirth, police allege.

Relatives of the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, found her bleeding after she gave birth at her Canowindra home in the state's central west, on Wednesday.

She later told police that the baby, a boy, had been stillborn, a court heard yesterday.

An autopsy confirmed the baby had died from six stab wounds to the chest, including one that pierced his heart. The baby had also suffered from asphyxiation, possibly from being placed in a bucket after birth.

Police investigators who searched the house found a pair of bloodied scissors.

The baby's mother has been charged with his murder. Her solicitor, Andrew Rolfe, had asked that she be released to the care of her parents so she could continue to receive medical treatment. Bail was refused and she is due to reappear in Orange Local Court tomorrow.
