    Wikileaks opponents face DDoS attacks

    Wikileaks opponents face DDoS attacks
    Laura O'Brien
    08.12.2010

A group, linked with the imageboard 4chan, has undertaken distributed denial-of-service attacks against Paypal, Swiss bank Post Finance and other sites who refused their services to whistleblowing site Wikileaks.

According to Ars Technica, the attacks are being taken under the Operation: Payback banner, which was responsible for attacks against organisations involved in anti-piracy lawsuits against filesharers, including the RIAA and MPAA.

The Swiss bank Post Finance’s website experienced downtime for over 16 hours and is still down as of the time of wiritng.

However, attacks on Paypal did not have much of an effect. Their blog was taken offline but the main site was not harmed.

The group also attacked the website of the Swedish prosecutors involved in the case against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange for alleged sex crimes.

    This site is also down.

Reportedly, the group is targeting any site that is “bowing down to government pressure.”

Many sites which have refused services for Wikileaks, but have denied that it was due to government pressure.

EveryDNS.net revoked their services from Wikileaks, saying that they violated the terms of services. Amazon also removed their hosting services, saying that the content Wikileaks posted was not theirs and could harm others.

Assange is currently under arrest in the UK to face the allegations of sexual assault made against him.

Jees, a cyber war is starting, doubt they can take paypal down, but all the small sites and govt sites etc stand a good chance of being taken down, wouldn't be suprised if they start hacking all the assange haters email accounts etc, expect more leaks

4chan rushes to WikiLeaks' defense, forces Swiss banking site offline
    Peter Bright

The forces of Anonymous have taken aim at several companies who are refusing to do business with WikiLeaks. 4chan's hordes have launched distributed denial-of-service attacks against PayPal, Swiss bank PostFinance, and other sites that have hindered the whistleblowing site's operations.

A self-styled spokesman for the group calling himself "Coldblood" has said that any website that's "bowing down to government pressure" is a target. PayPal ceased processing donations to the site, and PostFinance froze WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's account. The attacks are being performed under the Operation: Payback banner; Operation: Payback is the name the group is using in its long-running attacks on the RIAA, MPAA, and other organizations involved with anti-piracy lawsuits.

The initial attacks against PayPal were substantially ineffective; the PayPal blog was taken offline, but the main PayPal site wasn't harmed. The attacks against PostFinance, however, have resulted in the bank's website being unavailable for more than 16 hours. It remains unavailable at the time of writing. The latest target is the site of the Swedish prosecutors in Assange's sexual misconduct trial. This too appears to be offline. Twitter has also been named as a future attack target, due to its claimed censorship of the #wikileaks hashtag.

The companies being attacked deny that their behavior is a result of government influence. Rather, they are claiming that WikiLeaks and Assange have failed to adhere to the terms of use of various services. Amazon, which for a time hosted the site, said that WikiLeaks was failing to ensure that it "wasn't putting innocent people in jeopardy." PostFinance said that Assange lied on an application form.

In a case of tit-for-tat, unknown forces have since launched a denial of service attack against Anonymous' own site (one that took it offline shortly after publication), though the IRC channel used for coordination is still operational, and its denial-of-service software, LOIC, is still functioning properly.

WikiLeaks was itself the target of massive denial of service attacks in the wake of its release of thousands of US embassy cables. The source of these attacks remains unknown. In addition to making the main WikiLeaks site hard to access, DoS attacks against DNS provider EveryDNS resulted in the company cutting WikiLeaks off, as it was unwilling to tolerate the excess traffic.

In spite of this, hundreds of mirrors of the site have popped up across the globe, with Anonymous claiming to have created many of them. An "insurance file"—an encrypted torrent of the entire cable dump—has been widely distributed, along with the promise that the decryption key will be published should anything bad happen to WikiLeaks.

Assange himself is currently remanded in custody in the UK. Swedish prosecutors are seeking to have him extradited to face sexual misconduct charges. He surrendered to police in London and was arrested. Bail was refused over fears that he might flee, and also due to some fear that he was at risk from "unstable persons." With widespread calls for his murder, this might not be too far-fetched.

4Chan Takes Down Mastercard Site In Support Of WikiLeaks
    Alexia Tsotsis

In retaliation for refusing to let Mastercard customers donate to Wikileaks, 4Chan has successfully taken down the website of Mastercard.com with orchestrated DDOS attacks.

The 4Chan and Anonymous-backed Operation Payback has also lead efforts against the RIAA and you can find a direct link to more details on how 4Chan is organizing their WikiLeaks and Julian Assange support efforts here.

Attacks have also hit Paypal and Swiss bank PostFinance and other sites which have refused service to Assange. EveryDNS.net as well as Amazon are also possible targets.

Assange himself was arrested in London yesterday under allegations of sexual mis-conduct. It remains to be seen how the WikiLeaks saga will play out, but it is very obvious that the entire Internet will be the battleground.

They have already started Mid. the US government have set up a new agency just to combat wikileaks type leaks, secure their procedures and systems further, looking into legislation for net crime ect. and that work is definitely going to cost a lot of money. Companies are continually pouring money into Inet security in fact billions are used every year that you and i ultimately pay.

But you might be right that it all ultimately will be in vain, still they are going to try and we will be the ones to pay.

We've been the ones paying for the party all along, lars. A party none of us ever got invited to.

In a democracy the government is the servant of the people. I'm sure that if somebody came to any of us with evidence that a servant of ours was a liar, a cheat, a thief, and a murderer we'd be grateful for the information and act accordingly, not start screaming about the servant's right to privacy or about how the informant was a criminal for bringing us that evidence.

Hackers attack Assange rape claim lawyers site
    December 8th, 2010

Stockholm: Hackers have attacked the Internet site and email service of the lawyer representing two Swedish women at the centre of rape and sexual assault allegations against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

"Our e-mail and website were hacked last night or this morning," said lawyer Claes Borgstroem, who is representing the women.

"We think it's the same people (who attacked) the prosecutors (website)."

The prosecutors site was shut down on Tuesday on the day that Assange was detained by British police in response to a Swedish warrant but it had been restored on Wednesday.

The WikiLeaks site has also come under sustained cyber attack since it began dumping some 250,000 confidential US diplomatic memos on November 28.
