Born in Los Angeles, California, MacArthur was adopted as an infant by Charles MacArthur and Helen Hayes.
He grew up in Nyack, New York, and attended Allen-Stevenson School in New York, and later at The Solebury School in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where he played basketball, football, and baseball.
MacArthur was a popular and athletic student at Solebury - during his last year at the school he played guard on the football team and captained the basketball team.
He was also president of his class, the student government, and the Drama Club; he rewrote the school's constitution and edited the school paper, The Scribe, and started acting early on by playing Scrooge in a local presentation of A Christmas Carol.

It was around this time that MacArthur started seeing fellow student, Joyce Bulifant. The couple were married in November 1958 but divorced nine years later.
Luckily for the actor, he had a solid social and family circle of literary and theatrical talent.
His godmother was legendary silent film actress Lillian Gish, and family friends included Ben Hecht, Harpo Marx, Robert Benchley, Beatrice Lillie, John Barrymore, and John Steinbeck.
He starred on Hawaii Five-0 for 11 years in total, from the first episode of it's 12-year run, leaving the show at the end of the eleventh season.

His last role was in the 1998 TV movie Storm Chasers: Revenge of the Twister.

Memorial services will be held in Nyack, New York; Palm Desert, Calif; and Honolulu, Hawaii.
