It shows men taking turns savagely beating the two brothers with sticks, drawing blood before dragging and hanging their bodies from a nearby pole. None of the dozens of people watching tried to stop the attack.
The incident is a blow to the already-shoddy image of the government as it appeals for international aid to cope with disastrous floods.
"Is this what we are? Savages?" asked an editorial in The News, an English-language daily. "So utterly bereft of a speck of humanity that a crowd of ordinary men are passive spectators to public murder?"
The killings happened on August 15 in Sialkot, a town in eastern Punjab province. As details emerged, authorities appear increasingly confident the two boys - Moiz Butt, 17, and his brother Muneeb, 15 - were innocent.
The two went to play cricket after praying and eating breakfast, carrying a bag with them containing game equipment, said Mujahid Sherdil, a top government official in the district. They were sons of a middle-class man who deals in fabric for footballs. Moiz was honoured with the title "hafiz" for having memorised the Koran.
An armed robbery had taken place near the cricket field, so residents were on alert and police were nearby. Apparently, when the boys appeared with a bag, they were thought to be the robbers, Sherdil said.
The origins of the video are unknown and there are reports that multiple men in the crowd recorded the attack using phones. Stations blurred out some of the more graphic images of the boys' bloodied bodies, but several faces in the crowd are clearly identifiable, including police officers in uniform who watched.
Punjab province Police Chief Tariq Saleem said the government has ordered two separate inquiries into the killings. "This incident is highly condemnable, especially in the police presence," Saleem said after visiting the boys' family. "All accused, including police, will be arrested soon."

After the Ambassador's speech the reporter should've gone straight to the nearest market, for pics of the stuff on sale.

It is difficult to disagree with such a statement.

Lets hope the perpertrators of such a hideous crime are properly dealt with by the courts and that the bystanders hang their heads in shame at doing nothing to prevent the atrocity.

Police Officers in uniform also witnessing the event should be immediately sacked/suspended as they are clearly unfit to protect the life of a human being.

    A truly appalling event.

If the beating to death of 2 innocent teenagers in public is a daily occurrence in Pakistan then i suppose, yes, i haven't been aware of it.

I suspect that most of us are aware that the value of a human life is less important to the people of Pakistan as demonstrated in the film, however, it is important that we, as more civilised, moderate humans do not value the lives of those innocent teenagers any less.

While I agree, can't say I'd blame a uniform for staying on the sidelines. When an enraged mob is on the lynch, I can't see them deterred by a dutiful cop. More likely they'd turn on him as well.

Let's not forget the type of savage under review and their, er, ah, culture.

Not having or wishing to visit the country then you could very well be correct and looking at the film there may well have been a few senior religious figures complicit in the action which again may have detered the police from intervening.

It was a shameful barbaric event which sadly may go unpunished although the article i believe mentions that the perpetrators/police at the scene are to be arrested.

It was a shameful barbaric event to you, me, and most other civilised human beings. To those involved, it was perfectly natural and will be as natural for the next lynching.

Pakistan is a society enslaved by poverty, ignorance, and Islam, where rentamob can thrash, torture and set alight one on the say-so of another that they blasphemed against Allah.

It's true, violence and corruption are deeply rooted into this fucked up country. How many priministers have managed not to be blow up, shot, put in exile or thrown in prison?? Musharif is one a the few to avoid this fate, but only because he was sucking GW.Bush's cock very hard during the height of the 'war on terror' - or should I say 'appeared' to be sucking it - crafty buggers they are..

I for one say the fucktard Pakistani cricket team should donate a million $$ each to the relief fund!!!

Most rational people do not need to consider why Pakistan has evolved into a failed nation. Only fools, children and politicians subscribe to the glaring fallacy that the cause must be something other than Islam.

I've just been reading a piece by Moorthy Muthuswamy that was sent to me together with pages of comment and references. Will adapt and post later on this or the koran, allah thread.

We owed it to the Indians to remove this carbuncle. Most Indians are glad that we did.

Not sure about that. Some there seem to think it belongs to some kind of greater Hindustan.

See revisionist Arian Invasion Theory that's becoming more and more popular amongst those blackies.

With Britain becoming worse and worse by the day, I propose that we all seek asylum somewhere.

    I suggest Pakistan:

We could build a huge church in the middle of Islamabad that dominates the skyline, set up chippys and shops on every corner, assault the locals who dare to come into "our" part of town, set up specialist shops selling pork products and non-halal meat, protest to the government that the name "Ramadan" is offensive to our religion, and ask that they make it more inclusive by changing it to "Starve Yourself Fest."
