Doubtful if there is any cover-up as this has happened twice before. Just something that happens, if it wasn't gun crime then there's bound to be something else, no system or society can be perfect.

'A freak happening' 'An occurence out of normal' and all the likes of this . Some criminologist saying 'sometimes a man has secrets ect ect.

The man would have had to have a serious Police Check and interview,a doctors report and and independant referee to get a gun licence (which appears to have had)'and a police check, a council check, a doctors medical and opinion that he was suitable man to be a taxi driver. All to no avail.

The system appears to be covering up like mad.

Condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.
    What cover up?

The mind is a very complicated and sophisticated piece of kit and as such it needs to be tuned very finely for it to work as it should. Sometimes a switch inside the mind is flicked on/off, it happens

I've just been listening to a Dr speaking on Radio 4 (sorry no link) who was on the scene shortly after the murders.

He described a scene of total carnage, multiple victims with head shot and blood running down the gutters.

Two small girls mute for hours after seeing a man take two shotgun blasts to the head and body right in front of them.

The body of a very small woman that he at first thought was a child because of the severity of the wound to her head.

What he described sounded quite horrendous and the Dr himself sounded quite disturbed from what he'd seen.

Family dispute theory over Cumbria rampage

Family dispute theory over Cumbria rampage

Investigations into what made a taxi driver shoot 12 people dead in Cumbria may centre on a family row, reports suggest.

Derrick Bird, 52, embarked on a rampage that began near Whitehaven and ended when he turned a gun on himself.

It has been reported he may have been involved in a dispute over a will, and police have confirmed solicitor Kevin Commons is among the dead.

Eleven people were injured as he drove around shooting indiscriminately.

Eight of those are being treated at Whitehaven's West Cumberland Hospital and the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. All are in a stable or comfortable condition, said the NHS.

The remaining three have been allowed to leave hospital.

Police said Bird had firearms licences, which he is understood to have held for 20 years.

Cumbria Police's Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Hyde said: "He had a shotgun certificate and a firearms licence for weapons but we do not know at this stage whether the weapons that we recovered are those he was licensed for.

"A detailed ballistic examination is being undertaken to confirm this."

Rifle and shotgun Two weapons have been seized by police and are being examined by forensic experts. These are a shotgun and a .22 rifle fitted with a telescopic sight.

The Cumbria force are now involved in what is likely to be their biggest ever investigation, which includes 30 crime scenes.

Detectives said they do not expect to find any more bodies, but are following up more than 1,400 calls from people including witnesses and concerned friends and relatives.

    AT THE SCENE IN GOSFORTH

Continue reading the main story Caroline Henderson
    BBC News
People living in west Cumbria are trying their best to return to normal life.
Just 24 hours after the first shots were fired, many shops and cafes are open for business.
The car park in Gosforth, the village where father of two Garry Purdham was killed, was full as residents came to get their groceries, trying to get back to some form of normality.

A delivery arrived as usual to the main shop in the village.

There was very little sign that any crime had been committed.

Police tape that had cordoned off areas previously had been removed, and police officers no longer stood guard.

Inside cafes, residents were trying to turn the conversation to other more day to day subjects.

Many said they had no choice but to get back to business as usual.

As Jill Holmes, 63, who lives near Gosforth, told me: "It has to be that way.

"We are traumatised by this but we have to just get on with it."

One of the key questions is what might have caused Bird to act in the way he did.

A possible theory is that he had been involved in a dispute with his family over a will, other reports suggest he had fallen out with fellow taxi drivers after he believed they had taken work from him.

A friend reported a brief conversation he had with the taxi driver the night before Wednesday's massacre, which ended with Bird warning: "You won't see me again."

The following day Bird is believed to have left his home in the village of Rowrah and begun the carnage by shooting dead his twin brother David, at his home at High Trees Farm, Lamplugh.

He then travelled to Frizington, where the family's solicitor was killed on his driveway in Frizington Road.

Mr Commons, aged 60, worked at KJ Commons solicitors which has offices across the region.

Next, Bird drove seven miles to Whitehaven where he shot dead taxi driver colleague Darren Rewcastle before heading through villages and countryside in west Cumbria, apparently choosing his targets at random.

Retired Sellafield worker Kenneth Fishburn, who was in his 60s, was shot dead in Egremont, while a woman of about the same age was killed while carrying her shopping in the town.

The gunman then moved on to the village of Wilton and murdered two more people, believed to be a husband and wife.

A part-time mole catcher, aged in his 60s, was the next to be targeted - he was shot and killed at the edge of a field in Carleton.

Then in Gosforth, Bird shot dead rugby league player Garry Purdham at point blank range as he worked in a field.

Mr Purdham played semi-professionally for Workington and Whitehaven, and was the older brother of Harlequins skipper Rob Purdham.

There were further shootings in Seascale, where cyclist Michael Pike, 64, and Jane Robinson, who was in her 70s and delivering Betaware catalogues, were both killed.

Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Hyde confirmed solicitor Kevin Commons died

Dr Barrie Walker, a local GP who was called to the scene of the Seascale shootings, said two young girls had witnessed Mr Pike's killing.

He said: "He was shot twice by the perpetrator and these two girls were watching it and he looked straight at them and these kids were mute for the next two hours. They couldn't speak for the next two hours."

He added: "It's a beautiful area... to see this kind of carnage in the streets. There was blood running in the gutters of the streets of Seascale and this is just something you don't expect."

The twelfth victim is understood to be 23-year-old estate agent Jamie Clark, who was driving through Seascale when Derrick Bird opened fire at him.

It was unclear whether he died from gunshot wounds or the resulting crash.
His employers - lettings firm Belvoir - have paid tribute to "one of the nicest lads you could ever hope to meet".

Counselling sessions Floral tributes have been laid at the scenes of the shootings across the county.

Before Bird was found dead in Boot - shortly after crashing his car near the River Esk - his rampage had spanned about 25 miles.

Don Reed was one of the first people Bird opened fire on in Whitehaven - but luckily he survived with a wound to his back.

Mr Reed, a taxi driver who knew Bird, said: "I looked up and I saw Derrick Bird's taxi pull up at the back end of the taxi rank.

"The next thing was he shouted Darren Rewcastle and he walked in the middle of the road, and then he just opened up with a single-barrelled shotgun with a telescopic sight on it.

"He then drove up by me and just pointed it at me, and I just took a flying dive and he caught me in the back. I went on the floor and then I crawled along the taxi rank.

Floral tributes have been laid at the scenes of the killings "I was going to apply first aid to Darren, but when I saw Darren, he was gone.

"I crawled round and Derrick Bird was walking towards me with this shotgun."
Mr Reed crawled near the taxi rank and opened all the car doors to get some protection from the shotgun blasts.

However, when a friend shouted at Bird, the taxi driver got back in his vehicle and drove off - shooting another man in the face as he left.

Mr Hyde said more than 100 officers were involved in the investigation.

He said: "We are still at a very early stage in our investigation and we are not able to really understand the motivation behind it - or establish whether this was a premeditated or random attack.

"We are working hard to support the families of those involved and our focus is now on gathering as much evidence as possible to build up a clear picture of what happened this morning.

"We want to clearly understand his possession of these weapons, what happened, what went wrong and why he decided to use these to shoot people.

"What we want to do is ensure we understand what has happened, speak to people about him, his life, what has gone on in the last few days, what might have turned somebody into a killer."

Counselling sessions are being offered at the psychology department of the West Cumberland Hospital for anyone affected by the shootings.

Its not really been confirmed yet, but a picture is emerging that at least some of the killings were not quite as random as first thought, including this, which mentions LOS:

"There were also reports that three of his fellow taxi drivers in Whitehaven had been targeted after the group had travelled to Thailand on holiday together. Bird is said to have lured them to the rank using his taxi radio before he shot them, one was killed and two were injured. One report said he was angry after a Thai woman “stung” him for thousands of pounds during one of his foreign trips".

I guess the truth will out in due course on this, as two of the cabbies survived.

    Cumbria Shootings: Derrick Bird's Victims

    Those killed were:
    David Bird
Reports suggest Bird's first victim was his twin brother. It has been suggested there was an argument over a will.
    Kevin Commons
Mr Commons, 60, a senior partner in law firm KJ Commons and Co, was found dead in the driveway of his house in Frizington. He was reportedly the Bird family's solicitor.
His colleague Marcus Nickson told the Whitehaven News: "We are all absolutely devastated. Kevin was a great man, a great lawyer and a very considerate man.
"If someone came to us and said he could not pay, then Kevin would represent him.
    "He was my dearest friend."
    Darren Rewcastle
Mr Rewcastle, of Bigrigg, died when Bird produced a gun and shot fellow taxi drivers in Duke Street, Whitehaven.
One cab driver, who did not wish to be named, said he understood three taxi drivers were shot, after an argument broke out at the Duke Street taxi rank.
    Garry Purdham
The farmer, 31, was shot dead outside the Red Admiral Hotel at Boonhead, near Gosforth, police said.
Mr Purdham was married with two sons, aged nine and four.
He played semi-professional rugby league for almost a decade with Whitehaven and Workington before returning full-time to farming at the end of the 2008 season.

The death of Garry Purdham leaves two children without a father

He was described as "quite simply a gentleman and a pleasure to know" by Workington chairman Dave Bowden.
"He was local lad who had a wonderful temperament and a really dry sense of humour. All the players looked up to him."
Mr Purdham's brother Rob, 30, captains Harlequins rugby league side in London and has been capped five times for England.
    Jane Robinson
The pensioner was shot dead while delivering Betaware catalogues in Drigg Road, Seascale, metres away from the home she shared with her twin sister, Barrie.
One local said: "You could not find two more gentle people than those two sisters."

Jane Robinson leaves behind a twin sister

Another added: "They are lovely ladies, Jane's sister will be devastated, heartbroken."
    Ms Robinson, 66, was unmarried.
    Michael Pike
Mr Pike, 64, who lived with his wife Sheena and son Jason, 39, in Seascale, was killed while cycling through the village.
His grieving son said: "We understand that he was shot dead while out cycling which he did most mornings to keep fit.
"He was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather. He was a happy man at the time he died and satisfied with the things he achieved.
View a gallery showing photos of the victims here
"It came completely out of the blue to us. It was totally unexpected. To the best of our knowledge we think this was a random murder.
He added: "We are well aware my father was not the only person who died and we feel for all the other people who lost loved ones."
Mr Pike was a grandfather of two and a father of three.
    Kenneth Fishburn
Mr Fishburn, a retired security worker at the Sellafield nuclear power plant, has been named locally as the victim who died at the bridge in Egremont.
Karl Scarr, 44, said: "He worked on the gates at Sellafield. After he retired I used to see him in town. He always said hello, he was a nice guy."
At the bridge flowers were left at the spot with a card saying: "RIP Ken - tragically taken but not forgotten". The card was signed "your girls and Marc - Ladbrokes".
    Susan Hughes
Susan Hughes, 57, was shot as she walked home with her shopping in Egremont.
Alan Shaw, 30, who lives on the same estate as her, said: "I saw her lying in the road, I thought she had been run over. Her shopping was on the floor and somebody had been out to place a blanket over her body.

    Victim Susan Hughes

"It was only later I found out she was shot. She must have been walking home from the shops."
Another neighbour, Billy Boakes, 23, said he believed Mrs Hughes used to care for a disabled girl.
He said witnesses told him the gunman "stopped his car, got out of the car, got his gun out, went up to her and just shot her in the stomach".
    James and Jennifer Jackson
The retired couple, from Wilton, were shot in their village after Mrs Jackson went out to get a paper, according to a neighbour.
The resident thought Bird had driven up to Wilton, honked his horn, then turned round and shot Mrs Jackson.
Her husband, who used to work for the ambulance service, was talking to another couple. He was shot dead and a woman was blasted in the shoulder.
"I have heard the gunman stopped his car and wound his window down and called over to people 'can you help us?'," the neighbour said. "When they have come to the window, he has shot them."
Praising the Jacksons, the neighbour said of the couple: "There were none better."
Their son Chris lived next door to them in Wilton and they also had a grown-up daughter living elsewhere in Cumbria, the neighbour said.
    Isaac Dixon
Mr Dixon, a part-time mole catcher, talking with a farmer when Bird shot him dead at the edge of a field in Carleton, Cumbria. The other man was left unharmed.
Neighbour Joan Ferguson, 64, said: "He helped everybody, he was that sort of person. He was a gentleman. He did a lot for everybody, if anybody wanted him. He will be sadly missed."

Isaac Dixon was a grandfather, neighbours said

Mr Dixon was in his 60s and lived alone in a flat in Beckgreen. He is said to have had a girlfriend, Pat, and a son and two grandchildren.
    Jamie Clark
The estate agent, 23, was driving through Seascale when he was shot.
It is not clear whether his gunshot wounds or the resulting car crash killed him.
Colleague Ryan Parker described Mr Clark, who worked in Cockermouth for lettings firm Belvoir, as "one of the nicest lads you could ever hope to meet".
Mr Clark appears to be the youngest of the 12 people who died.

So the part about a disagreement over a family will is bullshit? Why did he kill his twin brother and solicitor?

    From the Sun:
All three of the taxi drivers targeted had accompanied Bird on holidays to Thailand twice a year.
The mass killer was said to have lured them to their fates using his taxi radio - because he was seething after a Thai woman "stung" him for thousands of pounds.
The night before he had stormed home after the row with them.

I don't think its bullshit, although the dead brothers family are denying it. But its clear he targeted some of his cabbie buddies as well and killed one. The other and probably more plausible reason over that about LOS is to do with a row about touting?

None of which should justify killing, but if you're already losing it and have access to guns.....

Since Britain has a stricter gun control law the USA NRA are going to love it.
