Yes, Ted Heath has a lot to answer for, well he did, bless him.

He resided in my home town for decades and although Mrs Thatch didn't like him, she attended his funeral a few years back.

    Unfortunately for the British :

"Britain, whose own debts are on a similar scale to those of Greece, and which is predicted by the commission to have the highest public deficit in the EU this year, fears a long-term impact on its taxpayers. "

Today EU heads are meeting to discuss a rescue package for the Euro.
Greece is skint, Spain is skint, Portugal is skint, the Uk is skint although they won,t admit it.
We are about to borrow 650 billion euros from the IMF and we,ve already lent 100 billion of it to Greece, so that's gone, we'll never see that again.
Spain will be ok for 2 years or so, and no one even want to talk about Portugal who are so close to collapse that should anyone even say the P word the the euro would crash completely making the 650 billion we about to borrow worthless.
I can see countries like Greece adopting the us dollar like Cambodia have.

Man the barricades . . . start the jingoism. Xenophobia rules. If it's not the hordes of foreigners trying to get onto the UK it's the nasty Euros (Oh, you guys are European as well, by the way) trying to destroy the vcery fabric of pure Englishness!!!!!!

It's not a matter of keeping a currency afloat, MtD, it is a matter of supporting a fellow EU member. (As ridiculous as that is, in terms of it being Greece)

More like the French meaning they pick and choose what to accept from the EU, the EURO being a separate issue from the EU,

The countries hardest hit per capita contributing to EU are, 1. Netherlands, 2. Denmark, 3. Sweden with UK only on the 6th place of 10 contributors. The other 17 countries are beneficiaries i.e. getting the money.
Greece is on 4th place as a receiver, on par with countries like Lithuania, Estonia and Hungary.

The Brits will accept that which is brought into law, they will argue their case before that, the French accept the law but ignore it if it is detrimental to French interests

In fact the Brits are the Zealots when it comes to enforcing EU law.

That's now what about in 5 years when Greece looks like Cambodia and they are living in mud huts.
They've rested on their laurels a bit from the times of Plato; Socrates; Archimedes, etc.

I expect that once David Cameron gets to look in the cookie jar, presuming he is the man, there will be great shock on how broke the UK really is. The balance sheets are always fudged a bit for elections just as happened in Greece. Only natural to have a little spin. i hope there are not too many IOUs.

Alastair Darling gave assurances that the UK's total liability if there is a total default by Greece is £8bn, doesn't sound so bad, but then there is Spain, in trouble and already has unemployment at over 20% , then Portugal, Eire not having an easy time, is going to defer some payments, UK has got enough pain of its own to go through yet.

I can see all these new Eastern European members of the EU thinking, lets have a spending spree, we have deep pockets too! our fellow members can bail us out in a few years time !

How about that: the UK got EU membership with the sole purpose of sabotaging the whole EU project and minding her own business, but now she is FORCED by Lisbon treaty to mind the business of Greek fellas and sabotage her own currency, the pound.

Now this is karma in action

They are effectively monetizing the debt, following the USA printing their way out of the shit for a few months.

This is going to end badly, you know that don't you?
