    Edward Woodward has died

Actor Edward Woodward dies at 79

Woodward played a spy in TV series Callan

Veteran actor Edward Woodward has died aged 79, his agent has confirmed.
The Croydon-born star had been suffering from various illnesses, including pneumonia, and died in hospital, said Janet Glass.
Woodward is most famous for his roles in the cult 1973 horror film The Wicker Man, alongside Sir Christopher Lee, and US TV series The Equalizer.
Sir Christopher described Woodward as "a very good friend and a splendid actor".
Ms Glass said he had been ill for several months and passed away surrounded by members of his family.
The actor, who lived in Hawker's Cove near Padstow, died at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.
"I knew him a very long time and he was a superb human being," she said.
"That integrity shone through in the roles he played. I can't ever remember, in all the productions he undertook, anyone having a bad word to say about him and he never had anything bad to say about anyone else either."
Ms Glass added: "Universally loved and admired through his unforgettable roles in classic productions, he was equally fine and courageous in real life, never losing his brave spirit and wonderful humour throughout his illness.
"His passing will leave a huge gap in many lives," she said.
    Albert Square
He was last seen on screen in BBC One soap EastEnders as Tommy Clifford earlier this year.
Barbara Windsor said she was "deeply saddened" at the news.
"I have such fond memories of our time working together," she added.
Diederick Santer, executive producer of EastEnders, said: "All of us at EastEnders are very sad to learn that Edward has passed away.
"We were thrilled when he joined us for a stint of six episodes earlier this year. He was a delight to work with, and delivered a characteristically touching and layered performance. Our thoughts are with his family."
Woodward won a Golden Globe in 1987 for his role in The Equalizer

Robin Hardy, who directed The Wicker Man, said of Woodward: "He was one of the greatest actors of his generation, without any question, with a broad career on American television as well as British film.
"He was the absolute star of The Wicker Man. He was an extremely nice human being."
Film critic Barry Norman described Woodward was a "very fine" actor.
"He made about three dozen movies but he was rarely given the chance to star in a movie, " he told BBC News.
"The two films that do stand out are obviously The Wicker Man and Breaker Morant, about three British soldiers in the Boer War. In both he gave excellent performances."
Actor Simon Pegg, who was a big fan of Woodward and cast him in his 2007 film Hot Fuzz, said on Twitter: "So sorry to hear we have lost the great Edward Woodward. Feel lucky to have worked with him."
He later released a statement, saying that Hot Fuzz rehearsals "were often gleefully tossed aside just to hear him (Woodward) recount stories from his life and career.
"Edgar Wright and myself sought him out because we were fans of his work, by the time the cameras stopped rolling, we were devoted fans of the man. My love and sympathy goes out to Michelle and his family."
Woodward is survived by his second wife, the actress Michele Dotrice, and four children, three of whom he had during his first marriage.

RIP Edward Woodward. 'The Wicker Man' stands tall; brilliant movie! Always came across as a modest, earthy type of bloke.

Fantastic in the 'The Wicker Man' and I always enjoyed 'The Equalizer' as a kid. Always come across as a decent guy in interviews as well.

Reminds me of that old joke, "What do you call a man with 3 planks of wood on his head?"

    RIP Edward.

Yeah, I always liked him. The Wicker Man was a high point, much better than that shit Mr Cage churned out. Why did they do a tame remake? Some things should be left untouched.

    RIP.

Who was that scruffy little chap - his sort of sidekick - in the Callan series?

    A great double-act !

I grew up watching the Equalizer with my dad. One of the only things that I remember enjoying together.

    RIP to a great actor.

Being a fellow Eddie, i also was called by the nickname Edward would would in the school yard. Don't know why it was considered an insult, more of a compliment I would have thought.

    Great show.

And not once did you think an old man beating up young hoolums left right & centre as unusual.

    RIP Ed.

It was indeed a brilliant series Happy.

    Five years it ran for:-

Russell Hunter was the actor who played the taxi driver 'Lonely'

Sadly, Russell passed away in 2004.

He was also 79 years of age.

TV viewers first met secret agent CALLAN in a one-off Armchair Theatre play

    'A Magnum For Schneider',

in which the disgraced former top secret service agent is moved to a government section devoted to the elimination of undesirables - by whatever means necessary.

Callan's world was a violent, bleak world you kill first or be killed. He was a cold-blooded killer, an outsider, often in direct conflict with his superior, Hunter, a codename given to all Heads of Section.

So successful was the hitman with viewers that author James Mitchell was asked to write a series that went on to become one of the most successful series in British TV history and ran from 1967 through to 1972.

Callan made stars of the two central performers, Edward Woodward who played the disaffected agent and Russell Hunter, who played the snivelling, smelly, petty thief, Lonely, the spy's accomplice.

Made in 1973, this Feature Film is an expanded rewrite of the first TV episode in which the disgraced former secret service agent David Callan is given an opportunity to redeem himself with one more liquidation. His assignment is to kill a businessman responsible for a number of bombings and gun running, but not everything goes according to plan.

Interesting point, Edward Woodward married (for I recall the second time) Michelle Dotrice, who played the wife of Frank Spencer in that other great series

    'Some Mother's Do 'Ave 'Em.'

    RIP Edward and Russell.

Not as good as I remembered, but nostalgia wins the day.

I remember that, during the time that he was on "The Equalizer," he had a heart attack that required a triple bypass operation. At least he had that extra 20 years provided by that operation. RIP

His ex-wife, Venetia, is my cousin. When I was young, my family got invited to stay at his villa in Cyprus. He was a funny and generous guy. He lost that villa and his yacht when the Turk/Greek troubles kicked off. Sort of lost contact with him when he divorced Venetia and went off with Michele Dotrice of 'Some mothers do ave em' fame. Anyway, RIP to him
