MEMBERS of Silvio Berlusconi’s entourage are urging the prime minister to seek treatment in a clinic for sex addiction.

The 72-year-old billionaire’s private life has been the focus of a long-running scandal since he attended the 18th birthday party of Noemi Letizia in April.

His wife, Veronica Lario, 53, has demanded a divorce and Patrizia D’Addario, a prostitute, has said she spent a night at Berlusconi’s Rome residence last November — which he has denied.

The Veronica Trend, an updated biography of Lario, a former actress, to be published on Wednesday, tells her side of the story. It is based on interviews with the prime minister’s wife of 19 years.


The book’s author, Maria Latella, writes that a few members of Berlusconi’s inner circle are calling for the couple to separate formally, but then for Lario to “return to her husband’s side to help him find himself again ... also with a stay in one of those clinics specialising in curing sex dependence”.

“This scenario hasn’t been completely ruled out, and much will depend on how much the press — above all overseas — will continue to be fascinated by Berlusconi’s private life,” she writes.

Latella does not specify whether those backing this idea include Lario or any of the Berlusconi’s three children: Barbara, Eleonora and Luigi. A source said yesterday the clinic suggestion had been floated for the first time shortly before Berlusconi presided over the G8 summit at L’Aquila in July. It would involve a stay of one to two weeks.

But the book says the most realistic outcome, which the prime minister is understood to favour, is an uncontested divorce. Lario may then move from Milan to Switzerland, where she is building a house.

Over lunch in late April, Lario confided to Latella: “I think I have no choice but to separate.”

“Why don’t you talk, you and your husband?” asked Latella, who has known Lario for nearly two decades.

“I can’t. He would tell me yet another lie and this time I couldn’t stand it,” Lario replied. “I can’t condemn myself to being his wet nurse, and now I can’t stop him making himself look ridiculous in the eyes of the world.”

The previous Sunday afternoon, after a family lunch at her palatial Villa Macherio near Milan, Berlusconi told Lario: “I’ve got to go to Naples. I’ve got an important meeting on rubbish collection early tomorrow morning.”

“That was yet another lie,” said Lario. On the evening of his departure from the villa, Berlusconi attended Letizia’s birthday party.

“So it’s best to divorce. I don’t know where I get that conviction, that strength, from. In any case, he’s the one who’s reduced me to this. I could have gone on for years, but this way it’s impossible,” Lario said.

At the time, she made a virulent attack on Berlusconi, accusing him of consorting with underage girls. He has stated that he has never had an improper relationship with minors.

Lario, whom Berlusconi first courted after seeing her perform topless in The Magnificent Cuckold in a Milan theatre in 1980, is usually shy of the media spotlight. Since Berlusconi came to power in 2001, they have lived largely separate lives, with Lario ensconced in Villa Macherio.

In 2007 she demanded a public apology from her husband after he told Mara Carfagna, minister for equal opportunities and a former topless model, that if he was not married he would wed her on the spot. Berlusconi made the apology.

After Lario’s lawyer announced in May she was seeking a divorce, pro-Berlusconi papers published articles denigrating her. According to the book, this so incensed their eldest daughter, Barbara, 25, that she almost broke off relations with her father in a heated phone call.

That evening Berlusconi failed to turn up as expected for a gala dinner at an art gallery in Milan co-owned by Barbara. They have since been reconciled and Barbara stayed with her brother Luigi at Berlusconi’s villa on Sardinia’s Emerald Coast.

But Lario has stayed away from the estate. The couple are understood not to have seen or spoken to each other since the family lunch in late April.

Lario has lost none of her bitterness. “What I’m most sorry about is that a man like Silvio could have let himself down. He has done so much, he has conquered so much and today people talk about things that will make everyone forget what he really was,” Lario told her biographer last month.Berlusconi urged to attend clinic for sex addiction - Times Online

From his track record on tax dodging and bribing judges Berlusconi will no doubt soon be passing a retroactive law limiting divorce settlements.

I was suffering from sex addiction for years, till I took myself in hand.

Relations between Silvio Berlusconi and the Catholic Church sank to a new low after a high-profile dinner between the Italian prime minister and the Vatican's second most senior figure was cancelled.

Church officials were said to have gone “ballistic” over an attack by a newspaper owned by Mr Berlusconi’s family against the editor of a Catholic daily, Avvenire, who has criticised the prime minister over his eye for showgirls and starlets.
The cancellation dashed Mr Berlusconi’s hopes of a rapprochement with the Church, which has repeatedly criticised the 72-year-old premier’s moral conduct. .
The 11th hour cancellation appeared to be linked to a stinging attack by Il Giornale, which accused the Catholic editor Dino Boffo of being “bereft” of morals and hypocritical in writing editorials about the sex scandals the prime minister has been embroiled in over recent months.
Mr Berlusconi was due to have taken part in a religious service for the remission of sins in L'Aquila, the mountain town which was devastated by an earthquake in April. He was supposed to have participated in the service alongside the Vatican's secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who is second in seniority only to Pope Benedict XVI, and then attend a dinner with him.
But less than three hours before the events were due to take place, and despite weeks of planning, the Vatican announced that it was cancelling them.
Mr Berlusconi's office then said he would not be going to L'Aquila at all.
His participation had raised eyebrows because he was due to attend with his equal opportunities minister, Mara Carfagna, a former glamour model. The Church anticipated added embarrassment over the fact that as a Catholic who has divorced and remarried, Mr Berlusconi is not supposed to receive Communion.
The Vatican said it had cancelled the dinner because it felt the money would be better spent helping victims of L'Aquila's earthquake. But Church sources said the real reason was that Vatican officials "went ballistic" over the fact that Mr Boffo had been subjected to such a personal attack by Il Giornale, which is controlled by Mr Berlusconi's brother.

Surely one of the most harmless addictions out there... I wonder how they want to "cure" him? Take away his blue pills?

Berlusconi, one of those few people that I find repulsive yet admirable. Italy would be more boring without him. As my grandfather said well in his 80's,

Clinically I find the whole sex addiction thing rather interesting.

In such cases as celebrities it appears to be used more and more as some lame excuse for behaving badly and being caught.

How can the most natural behaviour be reframed as an addiction.

When John and Mary first got married John said, “I am a sex addict and I’m putting a box under the bed to help control my addiction. You must promise never to look in it.”

In all their 30 years of marriage Mary never looked. However, on the afternoon of their 30th anniversary, curiosity got the best of her and she lifted the lid and peeked inside.

In the box were 3 empty beer cans and $81,874.25 in cash. She closed the box and put it back under the bed. Now that she knew what was in the box, she was doubly curious as to why there even was such a box with such contents.

That evening they were out for a special Anniversary dinner. After dinner Mary could no longer contain her curiosity and she confessed, saying, “I am so sorry. For all these years I kept my promise and never looked into the box under our bed. However, today the temptation was too much and I gave in. But now I need to know why do you keep the 3 beer cans in the box?”

Silvio Berlusconi has hit back over accusations that he paid escort girls for sex saying he is "not ill but Superman".

The 72-year-old Italian prime minister has been at the centre of a series of sex scandals since it emerged that he had attended the 18th birthday party of model Noemi Letizia.

His wife Veronica Lario, 53, said she was divorcing him because he was "ill" and because of his "association with minors".

Mr Berlusconi hit back, saying: "I have never frequented minors, above all Miss Letizia, I have never paid prostitutes.

"At all times I have around 15 security guards around me, 10 waiting staff, musicians - at the most I might tell a little spicy story.

"Only someone who is ill in the head would invent something else and imagine something else took place.

In the space of five months Silvio Berlusconi is said to have attended 18 parties packed with beautiful women.
And last night he was accused of sleeping with at least two of them.
In fact, he is said to have had sex with two prostitutes and faces claims that other women were paid to spend the night with him - although it was not alleged they actually did so.
The allegations pitch 72-year- old Berlusconi back into the centre of a damaging sleaze scandal which began five months ago when he attended the 18th birthday party of a wannabe model and TV star.
Three months ago it was claimed escort girl Patrizia D'Addario, 42, had been paid to spend the night with him.
The latest allegtions emerged after prosecution documents in a case involving an Italian pimp were leaked.
They appear to show that Berlusconi had been at at least 18 parties involving 30 girls over five months.
Businessman Gianpaolo Tarantini, 36, is said to have supplied the girls to Berlusconi and claimed that one of them,Vanessa Di Meglio, had been paid to have sex with him.
In an interview with prosecutors on July 29, Tarantini said Miss Di Meglio was 'a dear friend of mine' who he had supplied with cocaine.
He added: 'If the chance arises she is not averse to being paid for sexual services. I supplied Di Meglio to prime minister Berlusconi for sex on two occasions in Rome, September 5 and October 8 (last year).'
Tarantini also alleged another woman, Maria Teresa Di Nicolo, 38, had sex with Berlusconi at his official Rome residence, Palazzo Grazioli on September 23, 2008.
Tarantini went on to describe how two escort girls Sonia Carpendone and Roberta Nigro, who passed themselves off as sisters, had been paid 'expenses' - but he did not say if they actually had sex with Berlusconi.
Tarantini named a further escort girl - Ioana Visan - as having been offered money 'in case she had sex with Berlusconi' and that she had 'stayed the night at his house' on October 8.
He also named Camilla Cordeiro Charao, a TV showgirl, as have being paid to spend the night with Berlusconi. Once again he did not allege she had sex with the media tycoon.
Other women named by Tarantini as attending the parties included TV star Letizia Filippi, a former girlfriend of Cristiano Ronaldo; Italian Big Brother star Carolina Marconi; models Michaela Pribisova and Linda Santaguida; and actress Clarissa Campironi.
Tarantini is at the centre of a fraud investigation in his home town of Bari which has become an inquiry into the supply of escort girls and cocaine.
Berlusconi has insisted that the scandal is part of a left-wing plot to oust him from power and says he never paid for sex.
Last night he attended a youth rally in Rome and joked: 'I will take questions from the guys but from the girls I want telephone numbers'.
Camilla Cordiero Charao said she had never had any relationship with Berlusconi or with Tarantini.
Earlier this summer Ms Di Nicolo's admitted being at the party saying: 'I danced with the Prime Minister and some of the other men. When he dances he is not a polipo (octopus) his hands stay in the right place.'
Tarantini told investigators that he showed no political bias and also supplied centre left opposition politicians with call girls including Sandro Frisullo, the former vice president of the Puglia region in southern Italy.
He painted a graphic picture of how Italian politics works and told investigators: 'I just want to say that relying on prostitutes and cocaine was part of my project of creating a network within public administration.'I thought that throughout all these years cocaine and girls was the key to opening the door of success in society.'

Berlusconi's sleaze scandal is said to have caused uproar with the Vatican and to have soured his relationship with the Church - although earlier this week he insisted ties were 'excellent.'
His troubles began in April when it emerged he had attended the 18th birthday party of Noemi Letizia, giving her a 6000 Euro gold and diamond necklace.
It led to his long suffering wife Veronica Lario, 53, announcing that she was divorcing him because she could no longer spend time with a man who 'associates with minors and who is ill.'
