Makes One Proud To Be British

UK divers have broken the world record for the most number of divers ironing underwater.

128 British scuba divers braved the freezing temperatures to take the record, from Australia, for the most number of people ironing underwater, at a depth between 15 and 20 metres, according to organisers.
Although there is fierce rivalry between England and Australia in this bizarre 'sporting' event, the aim was to raise money for charity.

In the annals of human endeavour and achievement this, surely, must rank right up there!

Extreme Ironing Underwater NDAC 10 January 2009

Extreme Ironing Underwater NDAC 10 January 2009

Yorkshire Divers sponsored attempt at a world record for ironing underwater. An official video is being produced - on sale to raise more money! - and will be advertised through Yorkshire Divers and NDAC when it's available. The official edit released to the media following the event is available at Extreme Ironing Underwater on Vimeo

These brief, personal clips have been put together with thanks to those in Group L (buoy 11) in 21m.

"128 scuba divers braved the freezing winter temperatures. The previous record was 72 but the British divers managed to get 86 ironing within a 10 minute period and this also included 6 freedivers. Water temperatures were in the region of 5 degrees Celsius and air temperatures as low as -2 degrees C. Divers covered the full range from technical diving with trimix to 55m to the shallow end at 6m. The event took place at the National Diving and Activity Centre (NDAC) near Chepstow, Gloucestershire and was organised by Gareth Lock, Morag Ward and John Turnock of the Yorkshire Divers internet forum (Scuba Diving Forums). In addition to breaking the world record, the aim was to raise money for the RNLI, the charity of choice for the forum for 2008-200."

Wouldn't want to cause a mass panic underwater now.

^^Always make sure to use a 3-wire safety grounded cable when working in wet places.

Well, if I needed to raise money for charity, I'd find something more entertaining.
    But I wish them well.
Maybe it is a British/Australian thing, ironing under water, and the video will make a killing...

Like "The Full Monty" underwater? I can see another British movie out of this , like Full Monty or Calander Girls.

Why? Do you really think the iron will take the wrinkles out ironing underwater?
I guess that wasn't the point. Looks so gay!
