Obviously too high profile for UK to want to deal with it and get involved in somebody elses problem. I honestly thought the Pohms would play it straight down the line and eventually concede to Thaksins wishes on technical grounds.

The way it was done with the announcement being made while he was out of the country and then refusing Thaksin re-entry was quite clearly a political more than a legal move that will damage Thaksins status on the world stage.
In fact, one could almost see it as an endorsement by the UK of military coups overthrowing democracy.

Thaksin Shinawatra - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    "[edit] Family background

Thaksin's great-grandfather Seng Sae Khu (surname ))was a Hakka Chinese immigrant from Meizhou, Guangdong who arrived in Siam in the 1860s and settled in Chiang Mai in 1908. His eldest son, Chiang Sae Khu, was born in Chanthaburi in 1890 and married a Thai woman, called Saeng Somna. Chiang's eldest son, Sak, adopted the Thai surname Shinawatra ("does good routinely") in 1938 because of the country's anti-Chinese movement and the rest of the family also adopted it.
Thaksin's father, Lert, was born in Chiang Mai in 1919 and married Yindi Ramingwong. In 1968, Lert Shinawatra entered politics and became an MP for Chiang Mai and deputy leader of the now-defunct Liberal party. Lert Shinawatra quit politics in 1976.
Thaksin's great-grandfather Seng Sae Khu made his fortune through tax farming. The Khu/Shinawatra later founded Shinawatra Silks and then by moving into finance, construction and property development. Lert Shinawatra opened a coffee shop, grew oranges and flowers in Chiang Mai's San Kamphaeng district, and opened two movie theatres, a gas station, and a car and motorcycle dealership. By the time Thaksin was born, the Shinawatra family was one of the richest and most influential families in Chiang Mai."

But is it? And what is the point of telling airlines to not let him board?

All they have done is temporarily clipped his wings and ability to come and go as he pleases. The guy was basically taking the piss with the UK and trying to manipulate it in his usual manner, claiming that it is a great democracy (and thus for some reason would go out of its way to be help him, a non-Brit). Thankfully the British authorities are more intelligent and mature than the thai authorities, and simply pissed on his fireworks.

I believe that asylum seekers usually turn up in the UK WITHOUT a visa. And toxin has the resources to pay for his own private aircraft to take him back there should he wish to claim asylum.
