More foreigners arriving in RP amid global crisis

MANILA, Philippines - More foreigners arrived in the Philippines during the month of September amid the financial crunch that continues to rock the world markets, the immigration chief said Thursday.

At the same time, Bureau of Immigration data showed that the number of foreigners arriving from January to end of September this year is higher by eight percent compared to figures during the same period in 2007.

"The upsurge in foreign arrivals indicates that the Philippines is still an attractive tourism and investment destination amidst turmoil plaguing the world's financial markets," BI commissioner Marcelino Libanan said in a statement.

Records show that a total of 384,948 foreigners arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and other ports of entry last month compared to 356,760 in September last year.

The BI chief also noted that fewer foreigners - a total of 421, 208 - left the country last month.
Last year, the September figure for foreigners leaving was pegged at 471,638, a difference of 11 percent.

Americans were on top of the list of the 4.3 million foreign visitors to the Philippines this year.

About half of that figure - 2.041 million - were tourists while the rest were expatriates, businessmen and holders of other immigrant and non-immigrant visas such as investors and retirees.

I wonder if the TOT boss has viewed the Philippines tourists figures?

More competitive exchange rates, all the nightlife things you can find here and more beautiful islands to visit.

Strangely far more foreigner friendly regarding their rules and laws than LOS also.

I can nominate at least 100 of my friends who work off shore and who are now bypassing Thailand (for their time off work) and heading straight for the flip flops in a more friendly and cost advantageous environment.

Lot of mongers in there also just like Thailand. The most reliable tourist is the sex tourist. Cant keep a good man down

Well, as far as I know the philippines are even worse than Thailand when it comes to corruption and violence, so each destination will have it's pros and cons I guess, as long as there's no change in any of the 2 they won't steal each other many tourists and expats.

There have been several changes in nightlife and visa regulations over the last few years which make Thailand less attractive. Add to that the rising costs in T and the falling Peso value in the Phils.

How can you say that looking over the last few weeks in Thailand, beheadings and burnings of Monks in Southern Thailand, soldiers at war on the Cambodian border, people blowing themselves up in Bangkok.

20 years out of date but I stayed there a year and main downsides were ease with which they resort to violence (way, way above LoS) and absence of edible food...if anyone been there more recently can confirm both have improved, will be there for Xmas.

May have posted this before, but a few years ago a friend's cab was stopped from the airport heading for Ermita, he was stripped to his underwear and left on the side of the road in shock and ego bruised but otherwise undamaged.

Tiger beer is from Singapore . . . You must mean San Miguel . . . a bit sweet, but not a bad drop.

I have to go to the Philippines every couple of weeks and I'd put it on par with Thailand in terms of corruption, though violence is more possible there . . . every man and his dog has a gun - see my thread on pictures from abroad.

Manila is a dump.

My business is on Mindanao, not a good place to be right now, and Manila but there are so very many beautiful islands and even more beautiful beaches . . .

Between the two, TH and PI, I'd choose ....... neither, to live

I've not had Khmer, but Burmese food isn't half bad . . . Philippine 'cuisine' centres around Jollybee, a nasty fast-food knock-off, and loads and loads of pork . . . usually fried.

Luckily our littlest one's nanny, who is a Filipina, was a vegetarian back home so she knows how to cook without using pork and fat.

Much of it is the same as Thai, but they do have some 'unique' dishes that you wouldn't wish upon anyone.

Speaking of intestines, a few guys went out to a mamat stall for lunch yesterday and the yellow curry with bamboo shoots looks really nice . . . big spoonful and there was a jelly-rubber like substance that looked like octopus tentacles . . . tirns out it was cow intestine . . .
