    Did you know?

If you google a flight number the first resUlt is a google box with flight times, eta, terminal and gate information as well as a flight progress indicator?

What, they're supposed to cancel all flights out of sympathy?

Someone on the next day's flight might have been going to a funeral.

Anyone know if there are decent facilities in Mumbai? It's a 6 hour stop over on the way out.
lets hope I don't need that 300quid for a casket.

Not been to Bombay for about 13 years. It was a shit airport in a shit hole balanced on a big steaming turd, if that helps. Hopefully it's better now.

I flew one to the USA on China Southern Airlines last October. It's an impressive piece of machinery and except for the rock hard seats (like other planes have) in economy was quite comfortable. Very smooth with less wind noise than other planes I've ridden. It was also brand new and smelled like a new car inside.

Funny, check in and boarding at Ghunzhau China was not bad at all.

Getting my bag at LAX was a nightmare, so many people and so many suitcases it was hard to get close enough to see mine. Check in and boarding at LAX was a nightmare, that old airport simply cannot handle these large planes well.

Are airline booking websites 'search sensitive' ?
I often spend some time looking for value and they change prices so fast on some sites.

I just booked business class LHR to BKK with Finnair via Helsinki, good price £1380 inc
But it was £50 cheaper the previous day.

They adjust prices based on load I'd imagine. The less seats there are, the more they'll cost. Supply and demand and all that.

Boeing requests worldwide inspection of aircraft.

Boeing has requested airlines to carry out inspections of a transmitter used to locate aircraft after a crash.

A UK regulator had recommended the inspection after a fire broke out on a 787 Dreamliner jet parked at Heathrow airport earlier this month.

It was traced to the upper rear part of the plane where the part - Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) - is fitted.

Boeing said it had asked operators of 717, Next-Generation 737, 747-400, 767 and 777 airplanes to inspect aircraft.

"We're taking this action following the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) Special Bulletin, which recommended that airplane models with fixed Honeywell ELTs be inspected," Randy Tinseth, vice president marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes

^ Boeing has some crappy luck that the one which caught fire was installed on a 787 and happened at this time. Any other plane and it would not have been such a big story.

Describing this as a non event is underplaying it a bit, any incident that shuts down an airport going to be a big story irrespective of the plane involved. Beyond catarophic failure, such as the tail fail off, is there anything more serious than a fault that could lead to an in service fire? and the dreamliner has had two almost on top of each other.

Boeing took a lot of technical gambles, some very large, with the dreamliner, its why it is the plane that it is and why its selling. Its hardly surprising that some of those decisions are coming back to bite them, its inevitable look at the a380 wings, its trent engine, dc10.... but if this is down to cable insulation choices and you add the batteries does make you wonder if they were just a little too risk tolerant in their desire to cut back weight.

Since almost every problem discovered on this aircraft ultimately boils down to the electrics, I'd say it's well worthy of the scrutiny.

Looks like Nok Air had a scare at Trang....

Nok Air flight DD7411 slides off Trang runway | Bangkok Post: breakingnews

A little unusual to skid off the runway during a take-off.

Could have waited for that storm to pass me thinks....

Interesting to see Nok Air opting for 737-800's....are they a purely internal carrier or have they managed to get some international routes?

    Updated at 5:32 p.m. ET

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. A UPS cargo plane crashed into a field near the Birmingham airport Wednesday, killing two pilots and scattering wreckage over a rural area moments after witnesses heard the massive A300 jet coming in at treetop level.

People living near the airfield reported seeing flames coming from the plane and hearing its engines struggle in the final moments before impact.

"It was on fire before it hit," said Jerome Sanders, who lives directly across from the runway.

The plane, which departed from Louisville, Ky., went down about a half-mile from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport and broke into several pieces and caught fire. The pilot and co-pilot were the only people aboard.

Mayor William Bell, who was briefed by the city's fire chief, said there were two or three small explosions that authorities believe were from aviation fuel.

April Odom, a spokeswoman for Birmingham Mayor William Bell, confirmed to CBS News that two bodies were found in the wreckage.

Earlier, UPS spokesman Jeff Wafford said there were two crew members aboard the plane, and Bell said the two crewmembers on board were the pilot and the co-pilot.

National Transportation Safety Board officials said investigators arrived on scene Wednesday morning. As of 5:00 p.m. ET, the tail of the aircraft was still on fire. First responders were working to extinguish the flames, so that investigators could safely retrieve the plane's black box and recorders.

The plane had skidded about 200 yards on the ground after impact, NTSB officials said.

Weather conditions at the time of the crash were rainy with low clouds. The plane's wings and tail was located about 80 yards away from the rest of the fuselage.

Toni Herrera-Bast, a spokeswoman for the city's airport authority, said the crash did not affect airport operations, but it knocked down power lines and appeared to have toppled at least one tree and utility pole.

UPS spokesman Jeff Wafford said the plane was carrying a variety of cargo, but he did not elaborate. The names of the crew were not immediately released.

The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team of investigators to the scene.

Ryan Wimbleduff, who lives just across the street from the airport property, said the crash shook his house violently. Standing in his driveway, he and his mother could see the burning wreckage.

"I ran outside and it looked like the sun was coming up because of the fire on the hill," he said. "Balls of fire were rolling toward us."

Chunks of riveted metal that appeared to be from the plane landed in the yard of Cornelius and Barbara Benson, who live just a short walk from the crash site.

Barbara Benson said she was awakened by a tremendous boom and "saw a big red flash" through her bedroom window.

As day broke, the two were able to see that the tops of trees around their property had been knocked down and they were missing a piece of their back deck.

Cornelius Benson said planes routinely fly so low over his house that a few years ago, the airport authority sent crews to trim treetops.

The planes come so close that Barbara Benson said she's sometimes been able to "to wave at the captains as they pass."

Sharon Wilson, who also lives near the airport, said she was in bed before dawn when she heard what sounded like engines sputtering as the plane went over her house.

"It sounded like an airplane had given out of fuel. We thought it was trying to make it to the airport. But a few minutes later we heard a loud boom." she said.

James Giles, who lives just off the airport's property, said the plane missed his home by a couple of hundred yards, judging from tree damage and debris. He was at work at the time but said it was clear from the scene that the plane was attempting to land on the north-south runway that is typically used by much smaller aircraft. Large planes such as the A300 typically use the bigger east-west runway, he said.

"They were just trying to get to a landing spot, anywhere," he said.

The plane was built in 2003 and had logged about 11,000 flight hours over 6,800 flights, Airbus said in a news release.

The A300, Airbus' first plane, began flying in 1972. Airbus quit building them in 2007 after making a total of 816 A300 and A310s. The model was retired from U.S. passenger service in 2009.

Wednesday's crash comes nearly three years after a UPS cargo plane crashed in the United Arab Emirates, just outside Dubai, killing both pilots.

Authorities there blamed the Sept. 3, 2010, crash on the jet's load of 80,000 to 90,000 lithium batteries, which are sensitive to temperature. Investigators determined that a fire probably began in the cargo containing the batteries.
