US has struck 3 Iranian nuclear sites, Trump says, joining Israeli air campaign

President Donald Trump said Saturday that the U.S. military struck three sites in Iran, directly joining Israel ’s effort to decapitate the country’s nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe amid Tehran’s threat of reprisals that could spark a wider regional conflict.

There was no immediate acknowledgment from the Iranian government of any strikes being carried out. The country’s state-run IRNA news agency early Sunday reported an attack on the country’s Fordo nuclear site that activated air defenses. The agency did not elaborate.

The decision to directly involve the U.S. in the war comes after more than a week of strikes by Israel on Iran that aimed to systematically eradicate the country’s air defenses and offensive missile capabilities, while damaging its nuclear enrichment facilities. But U.S. and Israeli officials have said that American stealth bombers and the 30,000-pound (13,500-kilogram) bunker buster bomb they alone can carry offered the best chance of destroying heavily fortified sites connected to the Iranian nuclear program buried deep underground.

“We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan,” Trump said in a post on social media. “All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home.”

Iran has been "months away from building a nuclear weapon" for years. This is a crazy and unnecessary escalation of the war and puts US lives at risk for very little reason.

Soon there will be a major influx of Iranian refugees into Europe and the same people that agree with this gungho attack on Iran will be moaning about the number of foreigners entering their country.

This is not the way to end the problems in the region. It is the way to make them worse!

I wonder if they have enough radioactive material to slip onto a few warheads and create some dirty bombs?

They've been forced into a corner now, haven't they?

Iran has a lot of fault lines in the area and there was an earthquake after the MOP hit. I wonder if a fault was on the edge and the bombing triggered it?

The second of those bombs is considered by many to have been a war crime.

Not that the bombing of Japan in WW2 has any relevance whatsoever with the current attack on Iran.

I remember not too loong ago here on TD some idiots claiming that Iran will not be a push over. Boy ohh boy how stupid are they feeling now? Are these the same idiots crying here now "Ohh my dear this is wrong" ? Lets face the Facts...where is the clock in Iran showing the time of Israel destruction? The clock has stopped ticking and some posters here should do the same.

I'am not a big fan of Israel (I choose the lesser evil ) but let's give credit where credit is due. Great job Israel! You have outsmarted the Middle East and the West and the funny thing is most people haven't even comprehended what they have done. I call that a real "Shock and awe".

    it has every relevance.

history teaches you everything need to know about world events.

and please stop going on about war crimes.

    wars are beyond rational legislation.

love it or hate it, in a war there are only winners and losers.

troy, in your futile search for the perfect world where everyone has all they need, smile all the time and live in harmony with their neighbours you have as little understanding about human nature as you do about politics.

there is no such thing as utopia outside of your ridiculous socialist party manifestos. there is only the real world. where it is survival of the fittest and the strongest. and challengers will always be challenged. yes its horrible and its often unfair, but thats the way it is and it will never change.

it is how the plant kingdom operates, it is how the animal kingdom operates and it is how we humans operate. its nature.

When Trump said before the weekend that he was allowing a 2 week window for negotiation my hopes faded for a decisive resolution. That would have allowed time for a lot of transport of nuclear enrichment hardware, possibly using the mysterious flights from defence ally China that have been showing up on Flightradar and may have been landing in Tehran.

I was happy to see, today, that this was a tactic to wrong-foot the Mullahs and have a surprise crack at Fordo.

However much you do not like Trump, the destruction of Iran's nuclear capability without any US boots on the ground seems like a win. Trumps claim that his enemies never know what he is going to do, and that this is a tactical advantage, seems to have some mileage in some circumstances.
