Democratic lawmaker killed, another shot, in Minnesota.

Two Minnesota lawmakers have been shot in their separate homes.
One of the lawmakers – Democratic state representative Melissa Hortman – has died, as has her husband, Mark, the state’s governor, Tim Walz, confirmed at a press conference on Saturday. He said the shooting “appears to be a politically motivated assassination”.

    Yep.

Authorities are still searching for a suspect in the Minnesota lawmaker shootings. Here's where things stand

A manhunt is ongoing about 36 hours after the killing of a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband, and the shooting of another legislator and his wife.

Police say they are combing the Sibley County area, where they found a second vehicle belonging to the man they’ve named as a suspect in the shootings, Vance Boelter. Authorities are asking residents to remain vigilant.

If you’re just getting up to speed, here’s what to know:

    • The victims: State Rep. Melissa Hortman — the top Democrat in the Minnesota House — and her husband were shot and killed at their home in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to Gov. Tim Walz. Authorities believe the same gunman targeted Minnesota State Sen. John Hoffman, also a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, who both survived the shooting and underwent surgery. Yvette Hoffman saved her daughter Hope’s life by throwing herself on top of her, a relative told CNN affiliate KARE.

    • Shoot-out and escape: Officers responded to a shooting at Hoffman’s address around 2 a.m. local time and were still investigating when, about an hour and a half later, officers who went to check on Hortman found a man coming out of her house. The gunman exchanged fire with officers and escaped.

    • Stun gun and law enforcement gear: The suspect was dressed like a police officer when he came out of Hortman’s home and was driving a vehicle that looked like a patrol car. He was wearing “a vest, with Taser, other equipment,” Brooklyn Park police chief Mark Bruley said Saturday during a news conference.

    • What we know about the suspect: Boelter served on a state board with Hoffman. In 2019, Walz put him on the Governor’s Workforce Development Board, a group of business owners who recommend policies to the state government. It’s unclear how closely Boelter and Hoffman interacted in that role, if at all. David Carlson, a friend of Boelter, told CNN affiliate KARE the suspect texted his friends the morning of the shootings to warn them he was “gonna be gone for a while” and “may be dead shortly.”

    • Hit list: Police found writings that included a hit list of nearly 70 names in the car. Those named are mostly Democrats or figures with ties to abortion rights, including Minnesota lawmakers Rep. Ilhan Omar and Sen. Tina Smith. Boelter was a conservative who was strongly against abortion rights, a longtime friend told CNN yesterday.

Oh Buddha, this is going to drive up the anxiety levels of US politicians. I'm glad I'm not a US politician. I feel this perp isn't going to be taken alive.

A good result for the cops. I'm guessing he'll be charged with state rather than federal offenses. If he faces federal offenses, Mr Trump might eventuslly ponder pardoning this loser.

Gee, I wonder which way he voted in the last election.

Boelter is a pro-life, evangelical Christian conservative. He served on a state board with Hoffman, records show. In 2019, Walz put Boelter on the Governor’s Workforce Development Board – a group of business owners who recommend policies to the state government. In a letter, Walz said the post was in recognition of Boelter’s “integrity, judgment, and ability.”
According to a spokesperson for the governor, the development board, which has more than 60 members, is one of many external boards and commissions whose members are unpaid and come from “all parties.” The spokesperson said the governor does not interview applicants to the boards.
His “hit list”, included over 70 names, mostly Democrats.
