Air india dreamliner flight to london crashes on take off.

An Air India flight bound for London has crashed in India’s western city of Ahmedabad.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, headed for Gatwick airport, was carrying 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members, the airline and police officials said on Thursday.

“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025,” an Air India spokesman said in a statement on X.

“At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”

The crash occurred as the aircraft was taking off, television channels reported.

Police did not specify whether there were any casualties, saying that it crashed in a civilian area near the airport.

Visuals showed debris on fire, with thick black smoke rising up into the sky. They also showed people being moved in stretchers and being taken away in ambulances.

Plane crash near Ahmedabad.. - Page 2 - PPRuNe Forums

it reportedly took off without backtracking, resulting in a TODA of app 1900m.. That sounds very marginal for a heavy 787 embarking on a 9+hr flight.
The horrifying video (IF legit) also suggests the aircraft is seriously on the backside of the power curve with gear down / flaps up..... Speculation: too early rotation due to rwy end approaching (too) fast-then mistakenly retracts flaps instead of raising the gear.... That would result in what we saw in the video...

Poor old Boeing, I'd speculate pilot error but Boeing will still get the adverse publicity.

I may have been a little hasty in blaming the pilots. There are now reports of engine failure on take off, although that should still be flyable with gear up, and also reports of bird strikes and possible double engine fail. That would be game over.

apparently there is one survivor. he was in seat 11a, next to an emergency exit, and managed to open the exit and step out before the plane exploded.

British man in “ Miracle seat” 11A lone Survivor

    LONDON − A near-miracle in seat 11A.
There may be no other way to characterize the fate of Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national who appears to be the sole survivor of Air India flight 171,which crashed on June 12 with 242 passengers and crew aboard.

Miracle escape of 'seat 11A' as British SURVIVOR is seen WALKING AWAY from Air India crash jet on local TV, after police said they feared all 244 on board Gatwick-bound flight had died | Daily Mail Online

11B must have had a chance but fxcked it up in some way. Perhaps he or she reached for a handbag or mobile phone. I suspect Mr. 11A must have opened the emergency exit as quickly as BLD opens a Beer Lao.

There is going to be a great global increase in the attention paid to flight attendant's safety speech at the start of each flight from now on.

^ doubt it. Will be forgotten history in a few days for most people.

Still haven't heard a good reason for the bang the survivor reported and why gear was down.

Gear was down because pilot 2 was asked to raise, but messed up and changed position of the flaps instead, according to the vid above.
