Drunk Brit, 33, indulged in champagne at Spanish airport lounge then assaulted cabin

A drunk financial worker assaulted a member of cabin crew onboard a flight to Gatwick after enjoying champagne at an airport lounge.

Harrison Tilson shouted abuse at other passengers before beating a flight attendant, having become intoxicated with alcohol.
Tilson, 33, had downed three glasses of bubbly before getting onboard the flight at Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

He then had another three glasses of red wine on the flight, and spilt alcohol on a fellow traveller as he entered the rage.
The inebriated passenger ignored instructions to remain seated when the flight landed at the Sussex airport and got up to go to the toilet while the aircraft was still taxiing to the terminal

Tilson, from Old Town, Lambeth, then confronted a passenger, threatening to strike them, when he hit a flight attendant who tried to intervene.
The drunken passenger had travelled out to the Spanish island to take part in a triathlon, before he flew home on May 15, 2023.

Staff on the plane described Tilson's conduct as a 'disgrace', reporting that he was rude and abusive from the moment he stepped on board.
After being found guilty at a trial at Crawley Magistrates Court, Tilson was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on October 18 for assault by beating, and for being drunk on board an aircraft contrary to the Air Navigation Order.
He was handed a two-year community order and must complete 250 hours of unpaid work.
On top of court costs of £1,500, the financial worker was also ordered to pay £1,800 to the cabin crew member he abused, who had to take a significant time off work to recover.
Police Constable Sam Dee from Gatwick's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) branded Tilson's behaviour as 'appalling'.

He said: 'This case demonstrates the impact alcohol can have on your body. The impact increases when you are in the air, flying at a higher altitude and with a reduced air pressure.

Tilson's behaviour was appalling. No cabin crew worker should have to accept being abused and assaulted as simply part of the job.
'That is why we are determined to pursue prosecutions against those who break the law on board aircraft.
'For Tilson, this has proved to be an expensive case. It should act as a warning to all passengers about the risks of consuming alcohol before boarding a flight or while on board.'
Airlines have had to cope with a spike of alcohol-fuelled disorder on board aircraft, leading to calls for tougher laws to be introduced to tackle the issue.

Last month, Ryanair chief Michael O'Leary expressed support for a two-drink limit on flights as well as in aircraft bars.
He added that his airline was dealing with assault cases on a weekly basis.
