Australia wedding bus crash: Ten people killed and 11 injured

Ten people have been killed in a bus crash in Australia, police say.

Eleven others have been injured and were taken to hospitals by helicopter and road after the vehicle reportedly "rolled".

A further 18 passengers were unhurt in the incident which happened just after 11.30pm (local time) on Sunday in foggy conditions at a roundabout in the town of Greta, New South Wales.

The bus had been taking guests back from a wedding to their accommodation.

Family and friends have been arriving at the crash site on Monday morning.

"It was a nice day, a pretty good wedding... fairytale stuff really... we got the news that there had been a crash, and we all started panicking," a guest told reporters.

Greta is in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine region.

Police are investigating a number of theories over the potential cause of a devastating wedding bus crash that claimed at least 10 lives overnight.

The incident occurred in fog just after 11.30pm on Sunday night, after the coach picked up around 40 guests from a wedding held at the picturesque Wandin Valley Estate in Lovedale.
Around 17 minutes into the journey to guests’ accommodation in nearby Singleton, it is understood the bus rolled at a roundabout at Wine Country Drive near the Hunter Expressway off ramp at Greta in the wine region, which is a major tourism and wedding destination.
Emergency services, including ambulance, NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Rural Fire Service, police and Highway Patrol rushed to the site, and were met with horrifying scenes.
Police have confirmed 10 fatalities – although the death toll could rise further – with 25 passengers hospitalised, including some who have lost limbs.
It is understood 18 guests were uninjured in the crash.

    ‘Driving erratically’
Quoting police sources, Nine newspapers are reporting that the driver of the coach may have been “driving erratically” before the vehicle rolled.
However, tests reportedly showed he was not over the legal blood alcohol limit at the time.
It comes as NSW Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman confirmed on Monday morning that the driver – who remains under police guard – “will be charged”.
“A 58-year-old man, the driver of the coach, was taken to hospital for mandatory testing and he’s now at Cessnock police station and currently under arrest,” she said.
“A crime scene has been established and that scene is currently being forensically examined by both crash investigation unit and specialist forensic police.
“He’s been the driver of a motor vehicle collision where there have been fatal injuries and there will be charges pending.”
However, Chapman said it was “too early” to share specific details.
“There’s sufficient information for us to establish that there will be charges, but I won’t go into the detail about those at this stage,” she said.
“I can’t comment on the circumstances of the accident. It is far too early.”
She said the driver only sustained minor injuries, if any.
Meanwhile, locals have started to weigh in on potential circumstances surrounding the accident.

The legal blood alcohol limit for bus drivers should be zero.

judging by this pic, it looks like it just flopped onto its side. The bus is relatively intact. 10 ppl dead seems a bit strange for a tip over.

It looks like it tipped over onto the crash barrier, which will have penetrated the coach leading to body parts being sliced off.

Do coac passengers have to wear seat belts in NSW, I've never been on a rural coach in Australia only a rail replacement in Sydney and airport shuttles where there used to be none?

Suppose to wear seatbelts. There's a good chance they were all drunk, yelling, singing & dancing on the bus on the way home.

After a day on the piss at a wedding? Plausible.

Do coaches have to have CCTV?

Reported as not all from the wedding - link in post 5
a group of people on the bus were from a Victorian cricket club.

Warrandyte Cricket Club president Royce Jaksic believes that eight players and five of their partners were caught up in the crash and were lucky to escape with injuries, including a broken jaw and broken collarbone.

Morons. Evidence that the driver was actually working the brakes , and didn't just fall asleep or pass out with his foot to the floor , is an indication of a less serious crash. Not a more serious one.

I take that to mean they were wedding guests who were also from the cricket club. It was a chartered bus at 11:30pm heading from the wedding site (a winery, I think) to accommodation in Singleton.

According to The Telegraph, some of the survivors who have spoken to police allege Mr Button addressed his passengers through the vehicle’s internal microphone moments before he lost control and said, “If you think that was fast... watch this.”
The bus then overturned at a roundabout on Wine Country Drive, near the Hunter Expressway off-ramp in Greta.
Survivors and close friends said multiple passengers had expressed concern about the speed of the bus throughout the trip, and had urged others to return to their seats for safety

Yup. And that does not detract from the fact that “According to The Telegraph, some of the survivors who have spoken to police allege Mr Button addressed his passengers through the vehicle’s internal microphone moments before he lost control and said, “If you think that was fast... watch this”

It all points to the driver being at fault.

Brett Andrew Button, 58, was charged with 11 offences, including 10 counts of dangerous driving resulting in death, over Sunday’s tragic collision in the NSW Hunter Valley.
