Thieves have pulled off an incredible gold heist at Canada’s busiest airport, getting away with more than $22 million (CAD$20 million) worth of the metal.
Canadian police said on Thursday they were investigating the robbery of gold other “high-value” goods that were being moved through Toronto Pearson Airport.
The gold and valuables arrived Monday evening in a container that was offloaded from a plane and securely stored in a cargo holding facility, Peel Regional Police Inspector Stephen Duivesteyn told a news conference.
It was reported missing shortly after.

Mr Duivesteyn said the “high-value container was removed by illegal means from the holding facility.”
He would not comment on how the theft unfolded or who might be behind the caper.
“Our investigators have got their eyes opened to all avenues,” he said.
“We’re looking at all angles on how this item was stolen.”

The Toronto Sun reported that the thieves made off with 3600 pounds of gold, citing anonymous sources saying authorities are looking at organised crime groups in the region.
That amount of gold would be worth more than $100 million dollars.
However, given that police have listed the figure at $22 million, only a portion of the gold shipment may have been stolen.
“This is very rare,” Mr Duivesteyn said, describing the airport theft an isolated incident that has had no impact on the travelling public.
He said it was too early in the investigation to say if it was a professional theft or a crime of opportunity.
The Toronto Sun reports the gold belonged to TD Bank and had been brought to the airport by airline Air Canada. It was being held in a single aircraft container.
It has been reported that the gold and banknotes were being shipped as part of an intra-bank transaction.
