I don't know why so many folk miss the obvious. If you want to know a major reason for Vlad's enduring popularity in Russia (in spite of the never ending admonition of the West), just check our the rise in living standards and income during his tenure.

It's because he makes up polls and beats, jails or kills anyone who threatens his dictatorship.

However, Putin could have done much better. Russia has the largest natural resources. If he had spent the time developing these, Russia and its citizens would have been the envy of the world. Putin has failed his people and is now failing the world.
