Australian man dies after attack by a swooping magpie

Police are investigating after a cyclist died at Woonona yesterday.

About 8.15am (Sunday 15 September 2019), a 76-year-old man was riding a pushbike on an off-road path alongside Nicholson Park at Woonona, when witnesses report he rode off the path to avoid a swooping magpie.

The man then collided with a fence post, causing him to be thrown to the ground, sustaining serious head injuries.

He was treated on-scene before being airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.

Despite medical efforts, the man died yesterday evening (Sunday 15 September 2019).

Officers from Wollongong Police District are investigating the incident and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

I got attacked in Oz by one of these fuckers.

If you put your sunglasses on the back of your baseball cap, they don't attack you.

Never had my glasses the day it attacked me.

They attack only in the breeding season.

The magpie was recently voted Australia's favorite bird.

    ---

Magpie edges out white ibis and kookaburra as Australian bird of the year

Top three birds all backed by more than 10,000 votes in Guardian Australia and BirdLife Australia poll that attracted 150,000 votes

    ---

We've been feeding a family of them, off and on for over a decade.

Just a little, as we don't want to upset their normal hunting for food.

And yes, they have just bred and have chick/s in their nest.

They are very protective of their territory.

Not our video, but it could easily be.

Can go into full attack mode on golf courses in QLD, hard to hit with a 5 iron when they're in flight but it's possible. They'll also wait till you're some distance from your golf cart (as in on the putting green) and kamoy anything they can get their beaks on out of the carts. Sandwiches are a favourite target, but they've been known to make-off with car keys and wallets!.

^And let's not forget the Spur Winged Plover, they'll swoop in from behind and attack too. In fact, is there anything down there that doesn't try to kill people?
